Concept explainers
(a)
Interpretation:
The oxide
Concept Introduction:
All the main group elements except noble gas react with oxygen. Soluble ionic oxides are found on the left of the periodic table. Molecular oxides are found on the right side of the periodic table.
Metallic elements with low ionization energy form basic ionic oxides.
Elements with intermediate ionization energies form amphoteric oxides.
The general pattern of oxides is,
s-block | p-block | d-block | |
Type | Ionic | Covalent | Ionic |
Acid-base character | Basic | Amphoteric to acidic | Basic to amphoteric |
(b)

(d)
Interpretation:
The oxide
Concept Introduction:

Chemical Principles: The Quest for Insight
- The reaction of calcium hydride, CaH2, with water can be characterized as a Lewis acid-base reaction: CaH2(s)+2H2O(l)Ca(OH)2(aq)+2H2(g) Identify the Lewis acid and the Lewis base among the reactants. The reaction is also an oxidation-reduction reaction. Identify the oxidizing agent, the reducing agent, and the changes in oxidation number that occur in the reaction.arrow_forwardXenon trioxide, XeO3, is reduced to xenon in acidic solution by iodide ion. Iodide ion is oxidized to iodine, I2. Write a balanced chemical equation for the reaction.arrow_forwardWhy does the reactivity of the alkali metals decrease from cesium to lithium?arrow_forward
- The amount of sodium hypochlorite in a bleach solution can be determined by using a given volume of bleach to oxidize excess iodide ion to iodine, because the reaction goes to completion. The amount of iodine produced is then determined by titration with sodium thiosulfate, Na2S2O3, which is oxidized to sodium tetrathionate, Na2S4O6. Potassium iodide was added in excess to 5.00 mL of bleach (density = 1.00 g/mL). This solution, containing the iodine released in the reaction, was titrated with 0.100 M Na2S2O3. If 34.6 mL of sodium thiosulfate was required to reach the endpoint (detected by disappearance of the blue color of the starch iodine complex), what was the mass percentage of NaClO in the bleach?arrow_forwardHow many grams of oxygen gas are necessary to react completely with 3.011021 atoms of magnesium to yield magnesium oxide?arrow_forwardWhat is the formal oxidation state of chlorine in ammonium perchlorate, NH4ClO4?arrow_forward
- What is the main characteristic that determines whether or not an element is a main-group element?arrow_forwardWhy do Selenium and tellurium occur in rare minerals?arrow_forwardWrite the chemical formula for each of the following compounds, and indicate the oxidation state of the halogen or noble-gas atom in each: xenon tetrafluoride.arrow_forward
