Concept explainers
Whether a manometer (with one side open), a barometer, a tire pressure gauge and a sphygmomanometer measure absolute pressure or gauge pressure.
Answer to Problem 1CQ
A manometer (with one side open), a tire pressure gauge and a sphygmomanometer measure gauge pressure whereas a barometer measures absolute pressure.
Explanation of Solution
The actual pressure of a gas or a given position is called absolute pressure. Gauge pressure is the difference between the absolute pressure and the atmospheric pressure. A manometer is a typical U-shaped tube containing some mercury, with one side open to the atmosphere and the other connected to a vessel containing a gas whose pressure is to be measured. A manometer measures gauge pressure.
A barometer is a device used to measure atmospheric pressure. It measures the absolute pressure. A tire pressure gauge is a pressure gauge used to measure the pressure of the tires of vehicles and it measures the gauge pressure. A sphygmomanometer is the device used to measure the blood pressure. It also measures the gauge pressure.
