Explanation of Solution

Overview of the circulatory system:

The main function of the circulatory system is to circulate the blood to all the body tissues. Heart serves as the chief pumping organ to pump the blood. The human circulatory system is a closed system because the arteries and veins remain continuous with each other through small vessels. Arteries are involved in carrying the blood away from the heart, whereas veins carry blood to the heart. The extensive branches of the artery are known as arterioles, which further develop into “beds of small vessels” called as capillaries. The exchange of all gases and nutrients between the tissues and circulatory system occurs at the capillaries. Various substances from the capillaries are moved to the venules, which move back to the heart by increasing in their size to form veins. Veins empty its contents directly to the heart. The combined or mixed blood from upper and lower sides of the body accumulates in the right side of the heart, and it is known as “mixed venous blood”.

Functions:

  • Transportation of oxygenated blood to all the cells of the body.
  • Remove waste material through deoxygenated blood from the body.
  • Transportation of nutrients to all parts of the body.
