To test the speed of a bullet, you create a pendulum by attaching a 3.20 kg wooden block to the bottom of a 1.10 m long, 0.800 kg rod. The top of the rod is attached to a frictionless axle and is free to rotate about that point.
You fire a 10 g bullet into the block, where it sticks, and the pendulum swings out to an angle of 38.0°. What was the speed of the bullet?
(Treat the wooden block as a particle.)
A ballistic pendulum of length L= 0.24 meters is essentially massless except for a weight of mass mw = 0.24 at the end. A projectile of mass mp = 0.17 kilograms was fired at the pendulum from left to right. The projectile had an initial speed vi before it collided with the pendulum a distance d = 0.08 meters above the weight at the end. The projectile became lodged in the pendulum which swung to the right to a maximum angle of θ m a x= 45 degrees from vertical, as shown in the diagram above. Aside from what happened when the projectile became lodged in the pendulum, ignore all sources of friction and let g = 9.8 meters per second squared.
What was the initial speed vi (in units of meters per second) of the projectile
A 5.00-kg block is moving at 5.00 m/s along a horizontal frictionless surface toward an ideal massless spring that is attached to a wall. After the block collides with the spring, it keeps moving rightwards until the spring reaches its maximum compression of 1.68 m. After reaching maximum compression, the block and spring come to rest momentarily, and then move leftwards. While it is moving to the left, what is the speed of the block when it has moved so that the spring is compressed to only one-half of the maximum distance?
