Textbook Problem

Figure 9.10 lists 10 control plans from this chapter and three control goals for the information process. Fill in the table cells, as appropriate, to indicate which control plans can accomplish which control goals. Number your entries, and describe the reason for your entry (i.e., why the control can accomplish the goal). Some rows (controls) will have more than one entry. We have completed two entries for you as an example.

Example answers:

1. A well-designed document can be filled in completely and legibly and be input to the computer with fewer errors.

2. Approvals indicate authorization for a document or business event, thus reducing the possibility of processing invalid events.

Summary Introduction

To fill: The table cells to indicate the controls plans and its respective control goals.

Introduction:

Accounting Information System (AIS) is said to be the specialized subsystem of the Information System (IS). AIS can be used in the business events for the purpose of collecting, processing, and reporting the financial information.

Explanation

Given table:

Example explanation is given:

  1. 1. The designed document is the input to the computer with a fewer error. Hence, document design would accomplish input accuracy.
  2. 2. Written approvals help to reduce the invalid events.

Determine the control goals accomplished by “Preformatted screens”:

  1. 3. Preformatted screens help to achieve error-free input for the system.

Determine the control goals accomplished by “Limit check”:

  1. 4. The limit check will check only the content that is available within the pre-determined limits. If the human enters 800 hours rather than 80 hours, then the system will reject the entry, as it is above the pre-determined limit. Hence, the limit check helps to accomplish input accuracy.

Determine the control goals accomplished by “Confirm input acceptance”:

  1. 5. Here, the computer will inform the data entry clerk that the input is accepted. Thus, it helps to ensure that all the inputs are recorded.

Determine the control goals accomplished by “Digital signature”:

  1. 6. A digital signature helps the receiver to determine that the message transmitted is sent by the sender and it helps to make sure that the message is valid
  2. 7. The receiver can be able to determine the accuracy of the message by comparing the hash total of the encrypted message and the hash total of the signature message.

Determine the control goals accomplished by “Reconciliation of batch totals”:
