A. Gravitational Potential Energy
1) Climbing a vertical rope is difficult. You have to lift your full body weight with your arms.
If your mass is 60 kg and you climb 2.0 m, by how much do you increase your
gravitational potential energy?
2) Ten days after it was launched toward Mars in December 1998, the Mars Climote
Orbiter spacecraft (mass 629 kg) was 2.87 x 10 km from the earth and traveling at
1.20 x 10 km/h relative to the earth. At this time, what were:

b) The potential energy of the earth-spacecraft system?
A planet orbits a star with the path shown below.
a. On the axis below, draw the general shape of the graph of the planet's gravitational potential energy as it completes one orbit. Start the graph where the planet is shown in the diagram above.
b. In general, the gravitational potential energy for a planet orbiting a star is given by . The maximum distance of this planet from its star is 900,000,000 km, and the minimum distance is 320,000,000 km. The mass of the planet is 5 × 1023 kg, and the mass of the star is 2 × 1030 kg. How much does the GPE change during one full orbit?
c. c. A comet of mass 4 × 109 kg is pulled toward the star. If the comet's inital velocity is very small, and the comet starts moving toward the star from 600,000,000 km away, how fast is it going right before it hits the surface of the star? (Assume that it does not lose any mass by melting as it approaches the star.)
