To determine:
Welwitschia plant has a large number of closed stomata which are beneficial to the desert plant.
Introduction:
Welwitschia mirabilis is a desert plant which is mostly found in the Namib and Mossamedes deserts in Africa. The plant is often described as 'bizarre', 'weird', or 'unlike any known plant on earth’. Rainfall and moisture from fog are the two essential conditions for the survival of this plant. The average rainfall in Africa is about 2.5 centimeters per year. This plant can live upto 15,000 years approximately. Welwitschia has a large number of stomata (22,000 /cm3) which remain mostly closed. Stomata are responsible for the process of transpiration (loss of water in the plant).
