- 62 Ammonium dinitramide (ADN), NH4N(NO2)2, was considered as a possible replacement for aluminium chloride as the oxidizer in the solid fuel booster rockets used to launch the space shuttle. When detonated by a spark, AND rapidly decomposes to produce a gaseous mixture of N2,O2, and H2O. (This is not a combustion reaction. The ADN is the only reactant.) The reaction releases a lot of heat, so the gases are initially formed at high temperature and pressure. The thrust of the rocket results mainly from the expansion of this gas mixture. Suppose a 2.3-kg sample of ADN is denoted and decomposes completely to give N2,O2, and H2O. If the resulting gas mixture expands until it reaches a temperature of 100°C and a pressure of 1.00 atm, what volume will it occupy? Is your answer consistent with the proposed use of ADN as a rocket fuel?arrow_forwardAcetic acid, HC2H3O2, is the sour constituent of vinegar (acetum is Latin for vinegar). In an experiment, 3.58 g of acetic acid was burned. HC2H3O2(l)+2O2(g)2CO2(g)+2H2O(l) If 52.0 kJ of heat evolved, what is H per mole of acetic acid?arrow_forwardThe heat of neutralization, Hneut, can be defined as the amount of heat released (or absorbed), q, per mole of acid (or base) neutralized. Hneut for nitric acid is -52 kJ/mol HNO3. At 27.3C, 50.00 mL of 0.743M HNO3 is neutralized by 1.00 M Sr(OH)2 in a coffee-cup calorimeter. (a) How many mL of Sr(OH)2 were used in the neutralization? (b) What is the final temperature of the resulting solution? (Use the assumptions in Question 11.)arrow_forward
- Calcium carbide, CaC2, is manufactured by reducing lime with carbon at high temperature. (The carbide is used in turn to make acetylene, an industrially important organic chemical.) Is the reaction endothermic or exothermic?arrow_forwardA) a typical home water heater contains 40 gallons of water. How much heat (in kJ) is required to heat the 40 gallons of water (1 gallon=3.78 liters from room temperature 68F to 122F b) If the water is heated by combustion of natural gas (CH4) with oxygen to produce carbon dioxide and steam, how many moles of natural gas must be burned to heat the water in the water heater? (First write the balanced chemical reaction and calculate the delta H of the reaction.arrow_forwardWhat volume of oxygen will be required for the complete combustion of 54 L of hydrogen if both gases are measured at the same temperature and pressure. 4 H2 (g) + 2 O2 (g) → 4 H2O (l)arrow_forward
- Among the substances that react with oxygen and that have been considered as potential rocket fuels are diborane [B2H6(g), which produces B2O3(s) and H2O(g)], methane [CH4(g), which produces CO2(g) and H2O(g)], and hydrazine [N2H4(l), which produces N2(g) and H2O(g)]. On the basis of the heat released by 3.19 kg of each substance in its reaction with oxygen, and assuming that thermal energy is the most desirable property in rocket designs, evaluate the possibility of each being used as a rocket fuel. (Hint: Use the Supplemental Data to compute ΔHorxn in kJ/mol, and qsurr in MJ for each fuel. Enter unrounded values.) diborane ΔHorxn = qsurr =arrow_forwardWrite the equation for the standard enthalpy of formation (ΔHf°) for solid magnesium nitrate.arrow_forwardWhat is the kinetic energy (in Joules) of a chlorine molecule moving at 167 m/sec?arrow_forward
- C6H12O6+O2=CO2+H2O For this equation, if you consume 584 grams of sugar, how many liters of CO2 will you expel? Assume standard temperature and pressure.arrow_forwardwhen hydrogen and oxygen are burned to produce water. heat is produced at 58 kcal mol of water. A mole 6.02 x 10^23 molecules. how much heat energy is produced per molecule of water.arrow_forwardUsing the enthalpy change of -1594 kJ, what is the amount of heat absorbed or released when 1.10 L of phosphorus pentachloride at 22.5 degrees Celcius and 742 mmHg is produced?arrow_forward
