Recall from Chapter 8 that the product of the reaction between Xe(g) and PtF6(g) was originally thought to be an ionic compound composed of Xe+ cations and PtF6− anions (see Figure 8.22). This prediction was based on the theoretical enthalpy of formation of XePtF6 calculated using a Born-Haber cycle. (a) The lattice energy for XePtF6 was estimated to be 460 kJ/mol. Explain whether or not this value is consistent with the lattice energies in Table 9.1. (b) Calculate ΔH°f for XePtF6 given IE1 for Xe(g) is 1170 kJ/mol and EA1 for PtF6(g) is 770 kJ/mol. Comment on the expected stability of XePtF6 based on your calculation.
