Methods of
The three methods of depreciation are:
- Straight-line method: Under the straight-line method of depreciation, the same amount of depreciation is allocated every year over the estimated useful life of an asset.
- Units-of-activity method: In this method of depreciation, the amount of depreciation is charged based on the unit of production each year.
- Double-declining balance method (Accelerated method): In this method of depreciation, the diminishing value of the asset is taken into consideration for determining the depreciation for the succeeding years.
the amount of depreciation for four years ending December 31 by straight-line method.
1. (a)
Explanation of Solution
Determine the amount of depreciation for four years ending December 31 by straight-line method.
Year | Depreciation Expense (1) |
2015 | $71,250 |
2016 | $71,250 |
2017 | $71,250 |
2018 | $71,250 |
Total | $285,000 |
Table (1)
Working note:
Compute depreciable expense under
Cost of the equipment= $320,000
Residual value of the equipment = $35,000.
Estimated Useful life of the equipment = 4 years
Therefore, the amount of depreciation for four years ending December 31 by straight-line method is $71,250.
(b)
the amount of depreciation for four years ending December 31 by units-of-activity method.
(b)
Explanation of Solution
Determine the amount of depreciation for four years ending December 31 by units-of-activity method.
Year | Number of Hours (A) | Depreciable Rate (B) (2) | Depreciation Expense (A×B) |
2015 | 7,200 | $14.25 | $102,600 |
2016 | 6,400 | $14.25 | $91,200 |
2017 | 4,400 | $14.25 | $62,700 |
2018 | 2,000 | $14.25 | $28,500 |
Total | $285,000 |
Table (2)
Working notes:
Determine the depreciable rate of the equipment.
Cost of the equipment= $320,000
Residual value of the equipment = $35,000.
Estimated Useful life of the equipment = 20,000 operating hours.
Therefore, the amount of depreciation for four years ending December 31 by units-of-activity method are 2015: $102,600, 2016: $91,200, 2017: $62,700, and 2018: $28,500.
(c)
the amount of depreciation for four year years ending December 31 by double-declining-balance method.
(c)
Explanation of Solution
Determine the amount of depreciation for four years ending December 31 by double-declining-balance method.
Year | Depreciable Expense |
2015 | $160,000 (3) |
2016 | $80,000 (4) |
2017 | $40,000 (5) |
2018 | $5,000 (6) |
Total | $285,000 |
Table (3)
Working notes:
Compute depreciable expense for 2015.
Compute depreciable expense for 2016.
Compute depreciable expense for 2017.
Compute depreciable expense for 2018.
Note (6):
Since the depreciation expense should not exceed the residual value of $35,000. Thus, it should be adjusted to make the book value of the equipment (cost less accumulated depreciation) equal to its residual value. Thus, the depreciation expense for 2018 would be
Therefore, the amount of depreciation for four years ending December 31 by double-declining-balance method are 2015: $160,000, 2016: $80,000, 2017: $40,000, and 2018: $5,000.
2.
the method that yields the highest depreciation expense for 2015.
2.
Explanation of Solution
The method that yields the highest depreciation expense for 2015 is double-declining-balance method that is, $160,000.
3.
the method that yields the most depreciation over the four-year life of the equipment.
3.
Explanation of Solution
As calculated above, the total depreciation expense under three method for the four-year life of the equipment is same, that is, $285,000. Thus, it cannot be determined.

- Working Backward: Depreciation Polk Corp. purchased new store fixtures for $55,000 on January 31, 2014. Polk depreciates assets using the straight-line method and estimated a salvage value for the machine of $5,000. On its December 31, 2016, balance sheet, Polk reported the following: Required What is the yearly amount of depreciation expense for the store fixtures? What is the estimated useful life in years for the store fixtures? Explain your answer.arrow_forwardDepreciation Expense During 2016, Carter Company acquired three assets with the following costs, estimated useful lives, and estimated salvage values: The company uses the straight-line method to depreciate all assets and computes depreciation to the nearest month. For example, the computer system will be depreciated for six months in 2016. Required Compute the depreciation expense that Carter will record on each of the three assets for 2016. Comment on the following statement: Accountants could save time and money by simply expensing the cost of long-term assets when they are purchased. In addition, this would be more accurate because depreciation requires estimates of useful life and salvage value.arrow_forwardWhen depreciation is recorded each period, what account is debited? a. Depreciation Expense b. Cash c. Accumulated Depreciation d. The fixed asset account involved Use the following information for Multiple-Choice Questions 7-4 through 7-6: Cox Inc. acquired a machine for on January 1, 2019. The machine has a salvage value of $20,000 and a 5-year useful life. Cox expects the machine to run for 15,000 machine hours. The machine was actually used for 4,200 hours in 2019 and 3,450 hours in 2020.arrow_forward
- IMPACT OF IMPROVEMENTS AND REPLACEMENTS ON THE CALCULATION OF DEPRECIATION On January 1, 20-1, Dans Demolition purchased two jackhammers for 2,500 each with a salvage value of 100 each and estimated useful lives of four years. On January 1, 20-2, a stronger blade to improve performance was installed in Jackhammer A for 800 cash and the compressor was replaced in Jackhammer B for 200 cash. The compressor is expected to extend the life of Jackhammer B one year beyond the original estimate. REQUIRED 1. Using the straight-line method, prepare general journal entries for depreciation on December 31, 20-1, for Jackhammers A and B. 2. Enter the transactions for January 20-2 in a general journal. 3. Assuming no other additions, improvements, or replacements, calculate the depreciation expense for each jackhammer for 20-2 through 20-4.arrow_forwardChange in Estimate Assume that Bloomer Company purchased a new machine on January 1, 2016, for $80,000. The machine has an estimated useful life of nine years and a residual value of $8,000. Bloomer has chosen to use the straight-line method of depreciation. On January 1, 2018, Bloomer discovered that the machine would not be useful beyond December 31, 2021, and estimated its value at that time to be $2,000. Required Calculate the depreciation expense, accumulated depreciation, and book value of the asset for each year 2016 to 2021. Was the depreciation recorded wrong in 2016 and 2017? If so, why was it not corrected?arrow_forwardChoice Among Depreciation Methods Walnut Ridge Production Inc. purchased a new computerized video editing machine at a cost of $450,000. The System has a residual value of $64,000 and an expected life of 5 years. Required: 1. Compute depreciation expense, accumulated depreciation, and book value for the first 3 years of the machines life using the (a) straight-line method and (b) double-declining-balance method. 2. Which method would produce the largest income in the first, second, and third years of the assets life? 3. CONCEPTUAL CONNECTION Why might the controller of Walnut Ridge Production be interested in the effect of choosing a depreciation method? Evaluate the legitimacy of these interests.arrow_forward
