Chapter 9, Problem 9.76AP
Why is the following situation impossible? An astronaut, together with the equipment he carries, has a mass of 150 kg. He is taking a space walk outside his spacecraft, which is drifting through space with a constant velocity. The astronaut accidentally pushes against the spacecraft and begins moving away at 20.0 m/s, relative to the spacecraft, without a tether. To return, he takes equipment off his space suit and throws it in the direction away from the spacecraft. Because of his bulky space suit, he can throw equipment at a maximum speed of 5.00 m/s relative to himself. After throwing enough equipment, he starts moving back to the spacecraft and is able to grab onto it and climb inside.

A box of mass M=1980 g, filled with sand, is suspended from a 1=1.5 m long rope. The length of the rope is much larger than the dimensions of the box. A bullet with mass m=20 g flying with a velocity of v=500 m/s in the horizontal direction hits the box and gets stuck. Find the maximum deviation angle of the rope from the vertical. Neglect the drag force of the air. Take g=10m/s^2.
A 670 N student stands in the middle of a
frozen pond having a radius of 6.9 m. He is
unable to get to the other side because of a
lack of friction between his shoes and the ice.
To overcome this difficulty, he throws his 2.9
kg physics textbook horizontally toward the
north shore at a speed of 6.9 m/s.
The acceleration of gravity is 9.81 m/s².
How long does it take him to reach the
south shore?
Answer in units of s.
