Explanation of Solution

Mention an application for Market based analysis for local bookstore:

Market based analysis is used to find the pattern of items bought by the customers and predict the future purchase decisions of the customers. It determines how the customers buy goods together and the seller needs to know this pattern as more cross selling opportunity can be created.

For example, if a customer in a general store buys bread, but didn’t buy butter, then he or she is more likely to buy jam as compared to someone who didn’t buy bread.

Local Book store can create an application for market based analysis based on lift. A lift compares products and shows the relative increase or decrease in base probability of one product when other products are purchased.

When two items have a lift of 7:

  • As it can be seen that the lift is 7, it indicates that there is an increase of 7 times in the base probability of one product, when the other product is purchased.
  • The bookstore should make certain arrangements for these two products to be bought together, may be placing them next to each other or by giving various discount or other lucrative offers.

When two items have a lift of 0...

You are interested in looking at how competition affects gas prices, where you think that if a gas station has more competitors nearby, it will tend to have lower prices. To test this, you decide to use a natural experiment in which a chain of gas stations ("Thrifty") suddenly closed. This closure occurred between June and October of 2012, and meant that gas stations that were previous close to a Thrifty station experienced less competition than before. On the other hand, those stations that were not close to a Thrifty station did not experience any change in competition. You decide to use a differences in differences design, in which gas stations located near a Thrifty station at the start of 2012 are the treatment group and those that were not located near a Thrifty at the start of 2012 are the control group. You look at how prices change before and after the exit of Thrifty. This is plotted in the below graph, where the solid line represents the average price of stations that were…
A group of researchers conducted a study to investigate the effectiveness of a new teaching method for a particular subject. They randomly assigned 100 students to two groups: one group received the new teaching method, and the other group received the traditional teaching method. At the end of the semester, they measured the students' performance on a standardized test. The researchers found that the mean score for the group that received the new teaching method was higher than the mean score for the group that received the traditional teaching method. How can the researchers test the hypothesis that the new teaching method is more effective than the traditional teaching method? What statistical test should they use?
