Testing Claims About Proportions. In Exercises 7–22, test the given claim. Identify the null hypothesis, alternative hypothesis, test statistic, P-value or critical value(s), then state the conclusion about the null hypothesis, as well as the final conclusion that addresses the original claim.
7. License Plate Laws The Chapter Problem involved passenger cars in Connecticut and passenger cars in New York, but here we consider passenger cars and commercial trucks. Among 2049 Connecticut passenger cars, 239 had only rear license plates. Among 334 Connecticut trucks, 45 had only rear license plates (based on samples collected by the author). A reasonable hypothesis is that passenger car owners violate license plate laws at a higher rate than owners of commercial trucks. Use a 0.05 significance level to test that hypothesis.
a. Test the claim using a hypothesis test.
b. Test the claim by constructing an appropriate confidence interval.

- Family Planning A intend to have two children. What is tie probability that they will have child of each sex? The French mathematician IY Alembert analyzed this problem (incorrectly) by reasoning that three outcomes are possible: or two girls, or one child of each sex. He concluded that probability of having of each sex is mistakenly assuming that three outcomes are likely. (a) Model this problem with a pair of coins (using "heads" for boys and "tails" for girls). or write a program to model of problem. perform the experiment 40 mere times. Counting the number of boy-girl combinations. Estimate the probability of having child of each. (b) Calculate the correct probability of having one child of each sex and compare this with your result from part (a).arrow_forwardTesting Claims About Proportions. Identify the null hypothesis, alternative hypothesis, test statistic, P-value or critical value(s), then state the conclusion about the null hypothesis, as well as the final conclusion that addresses the original claim. Cell Phones and Handedness A study was conducted to investigate the association between cell phone use and hemispheric brain dominance. Among 216 subjects who prefer to use their left ear for cell phones, 166 were right-handed. Among 452 subjects who prefer to use their right ear for cell phones, 436 were right-handed (based on data from “Hemispheric Dominance and Cell Phone Use,” by Seidman et al., JAMA Otolaryngology—Head & Neck Surgery, Vol. 139, No. 5). We want to use a 0.01 significance level to test the claim that the rate of right-handedness for those who prefer to use their left ear for cell phones is less than the rate of right-handedness for those who prefer to use their right ear…arrow_forwardThe chi-square goodness-of-fit test provides a method for performing a hypothesis test about the distribution of a variable that has c possible values. If the number of possible values is 2, that is, c = 2, the chi-square goodness-of-fit test is equivalent to a procedure that you studied earlier. a. Which procedure is that? Explain your answer. b. Suppose that you want to perform a hypothesis test to decide whether the proportion of a population that has a specified attribute is different from p0. Discuss the method for performing such a test if you use (1) the one-proportionarrow_forward
- P VALUE FOR THE TEST HYPOTHESISarrow_forwardYou are a crime scene investigator trying to match the lead content of bullet fragments found at a crime scene to the lead content of a box of bullets found with a suspect. To simplify this question, assume that the instrument you use gives you one measurement per fragment in grams/cm3. Assume that you have 5 measurements from fragments found at the crime scene and 7 measurements from bullets found with the suspect. (a) What type of hypothesis test will you use?arrow_forwardTechnology. In Exercises 9–12, test the given claim by using the display provided from technology. Use a 0.05 significance level. Identify the null and alternative hypotheses, test statistic, P-value (or range of P-values), or critical value(s), and state the final conclusion that addresses the original claim. Old Faithful Data Set 23 “Old Faithful” in Appendix B includes data from 250 random eruptions of the Old Faithful geyser. The National Park Service makes predictions of times to the next eruption, and the data set includes the errors (minutes) in those predictions. The accompanying Statdisk display results from using the prediction errors (minutes) to test the claim that the mean prediction error is equal to zero. Comment on the accuracy of the predictions. - Determine whether the claim stated below represents the null hypothesis or the alternative hypothesis. If a hypothesis test is performed, how should you interpret a decision that (a) rejects the null hypothesis or (b) fails to reject the null hypothesis? A report claims that less than 78% of households in a specific county struggle to afford basic necessities. Question content area bottom Part 1 Does the claim represent the null hypothesis or the alternative hypothesis? Since the claim ▼ contains does not contain a statement of equality, it represents the ▼ null alternative hypothesis. Part 2 (a) How should you interpret a decision that rejects the null hypothesis? There ▼ is not is enough evidence to ▼ support reject the claim that less than 78% of households in a county struggle to afford basic necessities. Part 3 (b) How should you interpret a decision that fails to reject the null hypothesis? There ▼ is not…arrow_forwardYou conduct a hypothesis test. Assuming you have made no errors in your calculations, what should we conclude if the test statistic ends up being positive? The claimed population proportion must be large. The sample proportion is larger than (or greater than) the claimed population proportion. The sample proportion is smaller than (or less than) the claimed population proportion. The sample size must be large. The claimed population proportion must be small.arrow_forwardFormulate the null and alternative hypothesis and identify the type of test. 1. Dreaming in Black and White A study was conducted to determine the proportion of people who dream in black and white instead of color. Among 306 people over the age of 55, 68 dream in black and white, and among 298 people under the age of 25, 13 dream in black and white (based on data from “Do We Dream in Color?” by Eva Murzyn, Consciousness and Cognition , Vol. 17, No. 4). We want to use a 0.01 significance level to test the claim that the proportion of people over 55 who dream in black and white is greater than the proportion of those under 25. a. Test the claim using a hypothesis test. b. Test the claim by constructing an appropriate confidence interval. c. c.
