Concept explainers
Receptivity In learning theory, receptivity is defined as the ability of students to understand a complex concept. Receptivity is highest when the topic is introduced and tends to decrease as time passes in a lecture. Suppose that the receptivity of a group of students in a mathematics class is given by

- Flood Control A river is 8 feet above its flood stage. The water is receding at a rate of 3 inches per hour. Write a mathematical model that shows the number of feet above flood stage after t hours. Assuming the water continually recedes at this rate, when will the river be 1 foot above its flood stage?arrow_forwardAgriculture At a certain vineyard it is found that each grape vine produces about 10 lb of grapes in a season when about 700 vines are planted per acre. For each additional vine that is planted, the production of each vine decreases by about 1 percent. So, the number of pounds of grapes produced per acre is modeled by An=700+n10-0.01n where n is the number of additional vines planted. Find the number of vines that should be planted to maximize grape production.arrow_forwardDuring what time period would the broker advise buying if he thought 500 to 800 was an appropriate buy range? Example 2.10 Beginning in 2001, the price of gold was modeled approximately by G(t)=2551.18t dollars per ounce, where t is the time in years since the beginning of 2001.arrow_forward
- The rate of change of an autocatalytic chemical reaction is kQxkx2 where Q is the amount of the original substance, x is the amount of substance formed, and k is a constant of proportionality. Factor the expression.arrow_forwardSize of High Schools The farm population has declined dramatically in the years since World War II, and with that decline, rural school districts have been faced with consolidating in order to be economically efficient. One researcher studied data from the early 1960s on expenditures for high schools ranging from 150 to 2400 in enrollment. He considered the cost per pupil as a function of the number of pupils enrolled in the high school, and he found the approximate formula C=7430.402n+0.00012n2 where n is the number of pupils enrolled and C is the cost, in dollars, per pupil. a. Make a graph of C versus n. b. What enrollment size gives a minimum per-pupil cost? c. If a high school had an enrollment of 1200, how much in per-pupil cost would be saved by increasing enrollment to the optimal size found in part b?arrow_forwardbThe average rate of change of the linear function f(x)=3x+5 between any two points is ________.arrow_forward
