Describe your plans for your Cultural Immersion project. Explain what you are looking to learn and list three questions you will use in this activity. (250 words)
My plans for the Cultural Immersion project will be to look at a culture that is more prominent in the area where I teach. This culture would be the Hispanic culture. My plans for the Cultural Immersion Project will include reading various papers, watching videos, and exploring social media outlets on Hispanic students within the classroom, family connections, effective teaching for ELL students, and how to support these students in and out of the classroom. I also plan to talk to our district’s ELL teacher to inquire about the differences of cultures among the schools within our district. I have a friend that works in a neighboring district for a secondary school, and I would like to investigate and question how our schools compare and differ in supporting ELL students. Other plans include how to make my classroom inviting and understanding diverse cultures. These may include having special guests of a particular culture come in and talk to the students about their culture explaining how it is different and similar and the importance of learning about one’s culture. Incorporating native languages in the class and curriculum. Having students learn greetings and words to communicate with the ELL students. Labeling the classroom, showing cognates, and having peer helpers. I am looking to learn how to connect with these students and better support them, so they can learn like the rest of the student body. Three questions I will use include: How to build meaningful relationships with the
student and their family? How will these students learn best? What are my preconceived ideas about teaching a culturally diverse classroom, why and how they may need to change?
