In a short essay explain both a common Jewish/Muslim vs a common Christian interpretation of the pluralistic language used for God (e.g., The pluralistic name for God, “Elohim” in Gen 1:1 and “Let ‘Us’ make man in ‘Our’ image” Gen 1:26). As I discussed in part one of the lecture on Genesis, the Hebrew word for God in Genesis 1:1 is ‘Elohim’ which is plural. Jews and Muslims interpret the plural Elohim to be a literary device to convey the idea of majesty, whereas Christians believe the use of Elohim is the
first hint towards the triune nature of God. In addition, there is also pluralistic language used in Genesis 1:26 where God says, “Let ‘Us’ make man in ‘Our’ image.” Some Jews and Muslims believe this is also a literary device to convey the idea of majesty (as in the royal “we”), but other Jews believe when God said ‘Us’ and ‘We’ that he was referring to Himself as well as the angels. Christians believe the ‘Us’ and ‘We’ refers to the three members of the Holy Trinity. Make sure to articulate all of these points in your essay question for the full points. a. "Elohim" a plural word. Christians think that Elohim, the true nature of God is three of the same, whereas Jews and Muslims see it as a portray of majesty. b. “Let ‘Us’ make man in ‘Our’ image” pluralistic language. Some Jews convey as royalty, while other Jews believe that “Us” and “We” refers to God and his angels. Christians believe the ‘Us’ and ‘We’ refers to the three members of the Holy Trinity (Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit). 5. List and describe two arguments used to defend the historicity of Noah’s Flood and list and describe two arguments used to argue against the historicity of the flood (see part two of the Genesis lecture and Power Point to prepare for this question). a. 6. List and describe two theories used to explain the long-life spans recorded in the Pentateuch (see part two of the Genesis lecture and Power Point to prepare for this question). a.
