LS7B Week 5 Pre-Class Worksheet Fill out this worksheet as you complete your pre-class assignments. Bring your completed worksheet to class to Reprodu use as a reference for in-class activities. produce . . reproduc After completing your pre-class assignments, you should be able to: KNown ol * Compare and contrast the mechanisms of natural, sexual, and kin selection. cannot b * Define sexual selection * Define kin selection * Define the biological species concept. * Recognize the limitations of the biological species concept. * Define the ecological species concept and the phylogenetic species concept. * Differentiate between pre- and post-zygotic isolating mechanisms. » Differentiate between allopatric and sympatric speciation. 1. In two sentences or less, define sexual selection Sexual selection is a process in evolution where certain traits or behaviors contribute to an organism's reproductive success, often influenced by mate choice and competition for mates. It can result in the development of specific traits that enhance an individual's ability to attract mates or compete for reproductive opportunities. 2. In two sentences or less, define kin selection. Kin selection is an evolutionary theory that explains the evolution of altruistic behaviors, where individuals may sacrifice their own well-being to benefit genetically related relatives, thereby increasing the likelihood of passing shared genes to future generations. 3. How are kin selection and sexual selection related to natural selection? Kin selection and sexual selection are specific mechanisms within the broader framework of natural selection, with kin selection focusing on altruistic behaviors among genetically related individuals and sexual selection emphasizing traits that enhance mating success, collectively influencing the overall adaptation and survival of a species. 4. Define the following terms (you may have to infer from your reading). a. direct fitness Direct fitness refers to an individual's reproductive success measured by the number of viable offspring they produce and raise to reproductive age. b. indirect fitness ect fitness refers to an individual's reproductive success achieved through the support and reproductive ess of genetically related relatives, often involving behaviors that enhance the survival or reproductive \bilities of kin. c. inclusive fitness Inclusive fitness is a measure of an individual's overall reproductive success, encompassing both direct fitness (their own offspring) and indirect fithess (the reproductive success of genetically related individuals), providing a comprehensive assessment of evolutionary fitness within a social context.

b. Is the population of mice different in figure 3 than in figure 1? Explain why.
c. Living things that are well adapted to their ervironment survive and reproduce.
Those that are not well adapted don't survive and reproduce. An adaptation is any
characteristic that increases fitness, which is defined as the ability to survive and
reproduce. What characteristic of the mice is an adaptation that increased their
Eitness?
