5.02 Natural Selection Virtual Lab Report
Instructions: This lab is found on the last page of your 5.02 lesson. As
you progress through each slide of the Natural Selection Virtual Lab
Activity, please fill in this lab report with the appropriate information
and data. Submit this lab using the instructions on the bottom of this
lab report.
Lab Title & Student Name:
Include the name of the lab and your name
Objective(s):
All 3 are listed on screen #1 of the virtual lab
. Describes or
summarizes the purpose of the experiment…you should be able to get a feel for what the
experiment is going to be about
Hypotheses:
You will make your
2 hypotheses
on screen #6 of the virtual lab
.
There
will be one for the light environment and one for the dark environment.
The hypotheses
should make a prediction of the outcome of your experiment.
Light Environment Hypothesis:
Dark Environment Hypothesis:
Variables:
Independent
- what you change,
Dependent
- what you measure (data),
Controlled
- stays the same

Natural Selection Virtual Lab Report
Procedures:
The procedures are listed in Natural Selection Virtual Lab Activity. You do not need to
include them here.
Data and Observations:
Complete the simulation in the virtual lab. You will maneuver the predator to the rabbits
and click to eat them. Record the survival percentage rate for both the white and brown
rabbits in both the light-colored and the dark-colored environments for each generation.

Data Analysis:
Use your percentages in part 1 and this
google sheet
to easily create your digital graphs
that represent the rate of survival for the white and brown rabbits in
each type
of
environment. When you open the google sheet, input your data into the tables on the left
and it will create the 2 graphs for you in the white boxes on the right. To submit your
graphs, use one of the following options: 1. Click on your completed graph and then click
the 3 dots that appear in the upper right corner. Choose “copy graph” and then paste each

The inheritance patterns for some traits in guinea pigs are listed in the table below.
1. Identify the phenotype of a guinea pig with the genotype HhBBrr.
2. Using the allele symbols in the table, identify the genotype of a guinea pig that is
recessive for hair length, heterozygous for hair color, and homozygous dominant for
hair texture.

Question 9
(2018 6D) The Himalayan rabbit's habitat has cold, snowy winters and mild summers. The body is typically covered in white fur except for the nose, feet, tail, and
ears, which are covered in black fur.
Himalavan Rater
A scientist shaved an area of white fur on the back of a Himalayan rabbit and placed an ice pack over the shaved area. The shaved area grew black fur. Which of
these best explains why the hair that grew back where the ice pack was placed was black and not white?
Answer
A
The genes for black hair were activated by specific temperatures.
B
The white hair mutated to blak hair as the rabbit's body temperature decreased.
The coat color changed from white to black with the age of the rabbit.
D White hair only grows during certain times of the year.

What does it mean that a NYC population of Periplaneta americana (cockroach) is at Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium?
it means that the allele frequencies in the population change constantly generation after generation
it means that the allele frequencies in the population are stable from one generation to the next (not changing)
it means that mating is at random in the population

recessive genotype (aa) is 36%. Using that 36%, calculate the following:
a) The frequency of the "aa" genotype.
b) The frequency of the "a" allele.
c) The frequency of the "A" allele.
d) The frequencies of the genotypes "AA" and "Aa."
e) The frequencies of the two possible phenotypes if "A" is completely dominant over "a."

A. Directions: Write the cause of the change. Write your answers on a separate
sheet of paper.
Evolution is the change in allele frequencies in a population (gene pool)
over generations. These changes are driven by four (4) mechanisms.

Causes of Change
1. Natural Selection
2. Mutation
3. Genetic Drift
4. Gene Flow
