Urinary Lab Question: What is an explanation for the difference in color between Darlene's and Marcus's urine? Answer: Darlene's urine is darker than Marcu's, meaning she probably consumes less water and has retained more waste. Darlene's urine shows signs of dehydration. Marcus's urine shows that he is drinking enough water. Question: What is an explanation for the difference in cloudiness between Darlene's and Marcus's urine? Answer: Darlene's urine is clear and doesn't show the presence of particles such as bacteria, mucus, or crystals. Marcus's urine is cloudy, which means that he probably has the presence o f suspended/floating particles. Question: What is an explanation for blood in the urine? Answer: Blood in the urine (hematuria) may be present due to kidney diseases, infections, medications, and sexual activity. In the scenario, Marcus's results are positive for nitrate, which suggests urinary tract infection and it is likely the cause of hematuria as well. Question: Why is a urinalysis an important tool in a routine physical? Answer: Urinalysis is extremely important to monitor overall health, it helps to identify diseases and infections. Also, it is often used to monitor the treatment of medical conditions such as hypertension and diabetes. Question: What condition would explain the each patient's results? Answer: Overall, Darlene's urine results show normal conditions, she may need to consume more water and liquids since her urine was a little darker. On the other hand, Marcus showed signs of infection due to nitrates/hematuria presence and cloudy urine. Question: What is diabetes? How are type 1 and type 2 different? Answer: Diabetes is a disease in which the body doesn't have the ability to respond or produce insulin. This dysfunction can lead to elevated levels of glucose in the urine/blood. The difference between Diabetes Type 1 and Diabetes Type 2 is that Type 1 diabetes is hereditary, usually diagnosed early stages of life. Type 2 diabetes is diagnosed later in life, and may be caused by poor diet and lifestyle conditions, (Ireland, 2017, p. 399). References: - Ireland, K. A. (2017).
