One of the biggest distribution networks in the world is Walmart. Its logistics include over 7500 drivers, 56,000 trailers, and close to 6800 tractors. Conveyor belts extending 12 miles across a distribution center can move thousands of cases through the building every day. A few centers are also established to provide the impacted populace with prompt assistance during a natural disaster. Walmart adopted technology to provide its customers with more affordable prices. Utilizing technology, which allows stores to track inventory and replenish the shelves, made it extremely effective. The world's largest private company in terms of IT infrastructure is Walmart. Its technology aids in managing customer relationships,
tracking, and forecasting inventory levels, and predicting demand.
Target has a stellar reputation as a trustworthy retailer and offers a wide range of benefits to its customers, including a generous and flexible return policy. Target's recognizable stores can be found in all 50 states. Target's existence in the United States came to an end in 2018 when Vermont became the last state to welcome a store. Target has a significant impact, as evidenced by the fact that 75% of Americans live ten miles or less from a Target store. Even though Target Corporation is a worldwide company with offices in places like Japan, India, and Vietnam, there are no Target retail locations outside of the United States.
The biggest segment, Walmart U.S., consists of three main store formats in addition to digital retail. Walmart U.S. has consistently had the highest gross profit as a percentage of net
sales among our three reportable segments. Furthermore, historically speaking, it has made the biggest contributions to the company's operating income and net sales. Walmart International is the name given to our operations outside of the United States, which include wholesale, retail, and other ventures. Supercenters, supermarkets, hypermarkets, warehouse clubs—including Sam's Clubs—cash and carry, home improvement, specialty electronics,
clothing stores, pharmacies, convenience stores, and digital retail are just a few of the many formats that make up these businesses. Due to its merchandise mix, Walmart International's overall gross profit rate is lower than Walmart U.S.'s.
Our second-largest segment, Walmart International, has increased through acquisitions, the addition of retail, wholesale, and other businesses, as well as the development of digital retail. Sam's Club offers both digital retail and warehouse clubs that are exclusive to members. Since the warehouse club is exclusive to members, membership revenue accounts for a sizeable portion of the operating income for the segment. Compared to our other segments, Sam's Club has a lower gross profit rate and lower operating expenses as a percentage of net sales.
Target Corp. is now an omnichannel company rather than just a brick-and-mortar store. To contend with players in pure e-commerce, it has been updating the supply chain. its acquisition of Shipped to offer same-day delivery of various products, including groceries, necessities, electronics, and home goods. Target offers a wide selection of owned and premium branded products, from toys and clothing for men, women, and children to household necessities and electronics. In addition, it stores seasonal goods, auto supplies, home décor and furnishings, food, and pet supplies. Target Café, Target Photo, Target Optical, Portrait Studio, Starbucks, and other food service options are among the in-store amenities it provides. An edited food assortment, comprising perishables, dry grocery, dairy, and frozen items, is offered by a larger percentage of general merchandise stores. Along with a complementary assortment, its digital channels feature a broad merchandise assortment that
includes many items found in stores.

The MaskMake Company manufactures a variety of masks for the healthcare professionals
around Ireland. Company vans are used to deliver local orders directly to retail outlets. When
their business was small, the drivers of the vans were free to take routes of their choice as they
made the delivery rounds to the retail outlets.
However, as the business has grown recently due to the outbreak, transportation and delivery
costs have become significant. In an effort to improve the efficiency of the delivery operation,
MaskMake management would like to determine the shortest delivery routes between retail
outlets. For example, the following network shows the roads (distance in km) that may be taken
between a retail outlet at node 1 and a retail outlet at node 11.

Jordano Food Products Supply Chain Profile Jordano Foods Tracie Shannon, Vice President for Logistics at Jordano Foods (Jordano), had sent the following e-mail to members of the executive committee of the company two years ago: I just returned from a lengthy meeting with Susan Weber, CEO ofSAB Distribution. She is under great pressure from her Board ofDirectors to continue to grow market share and improve profitability. SAB received a recent tender offer from another larger food distributor to buy the company and several members of their board have recommended that the offer be seriously considered. Susan feels that SAB can continue to improve their “bottom line” with additional changes in service offerings. Ms. Weber met with SAB’s major suppliers and customers to discuss new services that SAB can offer to enhance the competitiveness ofthe SAB supply chain. Large trucks are an important piece of the logistics chain. However, there were 333,000 large truck crashes in 2012, resulting in almost 3,800 fatalities, the majority being drivers or passengers of other vehicles, not the truck driver. One accident in 2014 caused a public uproar when a Walmart truck driver fell asleep at the wheel after being awake for 24 hours and crashed into another car, killing one person and critically injuring others, one being a well-known comedian. The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration enacted tougher hours-of-service rules that went into effect in July 2013. One report claimed that the industry would lose $1 billion in lost productivity as a result of these rules, while another concluded the industry would realize almost $500 million in benefit from reduced driver mortality. The new rules have caused considerable controversy and have caused hardships for drivers. As one driver put it, “If the wheels aren’t…

Timberland Company is one of the world's best known manufacturers of casual
shoes and sports boots. For many years the company created a successful channel
of distribution by managing their logistical systems that were geared to large orders
sold to major department stores and retail chains. However, market reports
indicated that consumers were shopping in increasing numbers at small
independent retailers and boutiques for the kinds of high -quality shoes and boots
sold by Timberland. Therefore Timberland faced the problem of how to service the
large numbers of small retailers with their much smaller orders while still
maintaining high levels of efficiency and low order processing costs. To meet this
challenge, Timberland reengineered its logistical system by using modern scanning
equipment to control inventory, track merchandise and handle all paperwork
automatically.
Discuss the differences between channel management and logistics management.
