1 1-2 Journal: Operation Manufacturing and Operation of Services Adam Knapp Southern New Hampshire University QSO 600: Operations Management Dr. Laura Little 2/25/2024
2 Operations management is defined as the development and execution of business strategies that maximize the processing of information and productivity. It is the role of the operations manager to examine the materials, equipment, and workforce and make the determination on how to best work to deliver that specific company's goods or services to the customer (The University of Arizona Global Campus, 2023) . Operations services and operations management are usually put very close together within the operations umbrella in an organization, due to the number of similarities they have, but they also have differences as to why they are not in the same grouping. We will focus on comparing the two when it comes to customer involvement, production and consumption, supplier relation to the supply chain, and the delivery of products and services. Customer Involvement The needs of the customer will impact the content of the services offered, other than that, the customer has very little to do with the manufacturing aspect of the operation (Zhou, Park, and Yi, pg 139, 2009). The customer is being directly provided with the good or service that was manufactured, so they, in turn, deal more with the operation service, than the operation manufacturing. With this product being provided directly to the customer, the customer now has the power to rate and explain why or how they would recommend or not recommend the product to others who may be interested in purchasing the good or service. Production and Consumption When looking at production and consumption at the operation manufacturing level, we see that consumption and production happen at different stages, the need for inventory between
3 the stages of production, and the need for inventory at the completed product level (OpEx Learning, 2011) . When looking into the production and consumption at the operation of services we can see that they happen almost simultaneously. The product is bought and consumed for use all within a matter of minutes of each other (OpEx Learning, 2011) . Supplier Relation to the Supply Chain When dealing with supplier relation to the supply chain is truly being able to know when material will arrive. Without having the material, the goods cannot be manufactured, which in turn means that the goods cannot be consumed. Both operations management and operations services will feel the affect if the suppliers are unable to provide the materials to build within the pre-determined timeframe. Delivery of Products and Services When delivery/completion of the product happens, operations management is now done with the product, and this is when operations services becomes more involved, as they are now dealing with the customer and the consumption of the product or service. The delivery of the material is where operations service truly takes ownership of the product or service and serves as the face to face contact for the end customer.
