Barnana Case Study
AEM 2480
1.
Describe the early years of Caue Suplicy’s entrepreneurial journey. What qualities did he exhibit that helped him in his venture?
2.
What elements of the Barnana concept and business model help improve environmental sustainability and other societal developmental goals?
3.
If you were part of Barnana management, would you support launching a new plantain tortilla chip product even if it could not be made from organic ingredients – or would you endorse delaying it? Support your argument. During the early years of Caue Suplicy’s entrepreneurial journey, he displayed his dedication to hard work, his ability to be opportunistic and creativity. He displayed his dedication to hard work while he constantly tested out new products and versions of products to deliver the most effective product to consumers. He was opportunistic because when he came to the United States to pursue his triathlon dream, he noticed there were little real food energy options. Furthermore, Caue saw that gels and processed energy bars were very popular and he wanted to create a “real food” offering. Caue was creative because he saw that American entrepreneurs had taken coconut water and acai berries and made them into very successful products within the United States. This encouraged him to do the same with dried bananas which can be compared to coconut water or acai berries. Barnana utilizes bananas that are otherwise wasted. They buy bananas at a discounted price and use them for their business which reduces overall food waste. Caue replaced himself as CEO and the new CEO wanted to push the idea that organic and environmentally friendly foods do not have to be more expensive. They became a “B Corp” that pushed the importance of many social development goals. These steps allowed Barnana to become more desirable to customers that valued these qualities in a company. Barnana hired an informed project manager that could make their packaging recyclable.
I would support launching a new plantain tortilla chip product even if it could not be done from organic ingredients. I think that Barnana has seen some success, but they do not operate on a very large scale yet and this is why it is ok for them to launch a product without all organic ingredients. If Barnana can launch this product and see a large boom in sales, they will become an even more successful company that can give them more resources to make a good impact on the environment. I think that Barnana has made enough efforts to support the environment and it is now time for them to make a product that customers will buy in large quantities.

Wanted: Entrepreneur by Ron Wirtz
A working definition:
A bird's-eye view shows a lot of research on this topic of late. For example, the Entrepreneurship Research & Policy Network (part of the Social Science Research Network) was started in March 2006 and already consists of more than 4,300 papers. Babson College's most recent annual compendium of entrepreneurship research includes close to 200 papers in 26 categories. Universities are adding faculty and entire programs to study and teach entrepreneurship. In 1996, the Kauffman Foundation and the University of Maryland started what would later become the Global Consortium of Entrepreneurial Centers. Today, the network includes more than 200 universities.
Such activity and attention has improved our understanding of entrepreneurship, particularly here in the United States. For example, we have a much better idea of the socio-demographic characteristics of entrepreneurs: Men are more likely than women to start their own business;…
