Fracking in the United States
Fracking
Hydraulic fracturing, also known as fracking, is a
process that injects fluid at high pressure deep
underground to open and enlarge cracks in rock
formations. This process stimulates the flow of natural
gas, increasing the amount that can be extracted. Most
fracking fluids are water based. A solid material, such as
sand or ceramic beads, is added to the fracking fluid to
keep the fractures open and permeable after the
pressure is reduced. Other chemical additives are used,
depending on the characteristics of the particular well.
Fracking has become a highly controversial issue in the United States and
around the world. Today you will explore how it works, the impacts, and the
policies surrounding it. Finally you will design a study to explore if fracking is
causing an increase in earthquakes in specific regions in the United States.

What natural resource is fracking trying to access?
Natural Gas
●
Define fracking
The process of pumping pressurized fluid as a means of extracting natural
gas. This is after there are small explosions that take place for the fluid to
reach the natural gas deposits.
●
Explain the fracking process.
Drill long holes in the ground and use water and sand to create gaps in the
rocks. This process stimulates the flow of natural gas up the pipe.

Fracking 101: why fracked gas is dirty and dangerous
●
What are the environmental problems associated with fracking?
The contamination of fresh water and the displacement of the toxic
chemical used in the fracking process.
●
Which problem concerns you most? Why?
The fact that some chemicals can end up in fresh water sources which we
use for drinking water. I am most concerned about this because that can
directly affect me and my health.

Nitroglycerine ( C3H5N3O9) is a very strong explosive that degrades over time and is too shock sensitive to transport safely. Dynamite is made by combining nitroglycerine with stabilizers and adsorbents, which makes it much safer to use. The explosion of nitroglycerin can be represented by:
4C3H5N3O9(l)→6N2(g)+12CO(g)+10H2O(g)+7O2(g)
A stick of 40% dynamite is about 20 cm long and about 3 cm in diameter and weighs 203 grams. It is 40.0% nitroglycerine by mass. What is the total number of moles of gas produced when a stick of 40% dynamite explodes?

A natural-gas storage tank is a cylinder with a moveable topwhose volume can change only as its height changes. Its radiusremains fixed. The height of the cylinder is 22.6 m on a day whenthe temperature is 22°C. The next day the height of the cylinderincreases to 23.8 m when the gas expands because of a heatwave. Find the temperature on the second day, assuming that thepressure and amount of gas in the storage tank have not changed.

In a diesel engine the fuel is ignited when it is injected into hot compressed air, heated by the compression itself. In a typical high-speed
diesel engine, the chamber in the cylinder has a diameter of 10.7 cm and a length of 13.4 cm. On compression, the length of the
chamber is shortened by 12.7 cm (a "5-inch stroke"). The compression of the air changes its pressure from 1.00 to 32.0 atm. The
temperature of the air before compression is 345 K.
As a result of the compression, what will be the final air temperature (in Kand °C) just before the fuel injection?

The term “airbag” itself is misleading since there’s no significant “air” in these cushions. They are, instead, shaped and vented nylon-fabric pillows that fill, when deployed, with nitrogen gas. They are designed to supplement seatbelt restraints and help distribute the load exerted on a human body during an accident to minimize the deceleration rate and likelihood of injury. But while “supplement the seatbelt” is the mission of airbags, federal regulations require that they be tested and made effective for unbelted occupants, vastly complicating their task.
Airbags must do their work quickly because the window of opportunity—the time between a car’s collision with an object and an occupant’s impact on the steering wheel or instrument panel—lasts only milliseconds. For illustration’s sake, imagine a Corvette hitting a bridge abutment head-on at 30 mph. The clock starts the instant the tip of the car’s nose hits the concrete. The Mechanics There are six main parts of an airbag system:…

In a parallel universe the laws of physics and chemistry are quite different. A solid substance when
passes to the gaseous state keeps it 3-D structure, its volume and only its kinetic energy increases.
Suppose our ideal gas equation in this form; P.MA=dRT can be applied to these gases. Derive an
equation for the pressure of a substance that has a body-centered cubic (BCC) structure that shows
the relation between P and r. Take the side length of the cube as "a", atomic radius as "r", density as
"d", molar mass as "MA", number of atoms as "n" and Avogadro number as "NA". Verify your
