Report
Service Learning For STEM Students Kelly Grogan, CHE 111,029-044, Zach, 29, August 2023 This article talked about students fears and anxieties when presenting, whether that was in front of an audience or a camera. The main ideas discussed in this article were about competence and self efficacy within students and the benefits of service learning within the chemistry curriculum. First to explain what self efficacy means, is basically a students belief in their capacity, to understand material, and therefore improve behavior and self motivation to produce a strong performance in what they are doing. Next competence is basically a students ability to complete some thing effectively and successfully. therefore, when a student feels like they have been competent in a task, their self efficacy has reported to be higher. Service learning provides many benefits, especially in the chemistry curriculum because it allows students to gain skills that they would gain outside of normal scientific courses. These skills involve abilities that many employers search for in new recruits. This is why the service learning curriculum is so important for students, especially in stem majors because it teaches them different skills and outside learning that they can then transfer into their next job, and ultimately be more competent and productive in that next step of their life. As shown as well within the article, we see that there is a trend that the more a student experiences skill, their self efficacy goes up for performing that skill every time. Lastly, another huge important benefit of service learning is a students ability to participate in community partner interaction, because as students originally expressed doubt and anxiety, after actually completing the assignment, many students felt rewarded and incredibly proud in themselves. which then provides them with the necessary skills and learning to improve their self efficacy within this area of learning. Ultimately raising students competence because they felt more prepared and felt that they had understood the material more after going through community partner interaction or CP. therefore, the end conclusion stated that service learning was a very helpful tool for students in stem majors because of the preparation and newfound skills they earned along the way.
