Exam #2 (Part III) – Chapter 23 Microeconomics October 12, 2022 NAME _________________________________ ESSAY 1. Define price discrimination. What three conditions must exist before a firm can use it successfully? The price strategy where the price changes to different consumers which can depend on gender, age, location, season, etc. 1. Must have market power or must have imperfect competition in the market. 2. Must be able to divide or identify consumers in different groups. 3. Each group must have their own identical elasticity of demand 2. Describe the circumstance under which profit maximization is the same as revenue maximization.  Use a hypothetical numerical example to help explain why this is so. Profits consider prices into account and revenues do not. If the price of a product is lowered from $10 to $5 you will increase the revenue you bring in, theoretically if consumers are likely to buy more of the product at a lower price. 3. Explain why price is greater than marginal revenue for a single-price monopolist and how this differs from perfect competition. The MR curve will always be two times as steep as the demand curve. The demand curve reflects the price and the marginal revenue curve is below the demand curve, the price is not equivalent to the marginal revenue as it is in pure competition. 4. Describe the condition under which a profit-maximizing monopolist will be resource allocative efficient. A monopolist will deliver less output and offer a greater price. Opposing businesses will not deliver sufficient output to allocatively proficient. 5. Describe the similarities between why sellers want to price discriminate and why district attorneys want to plea- bargain.  In addition, discuss the conditions that must be satisfied before district attorneys (DAs) can plea-bargain successfully and how they relate to the three conditions necessary for successful price discrimination. Price discrimination has a bias towards groups of people with certain characteristics. Price discrimination helps boost benefits and maximize profits. Page 1
