Question Response 1. Location and Connectiv ity: What are the absolute and relative locations of your selected region? How does this region connect to others? The West Coast includes California, Oregon, Washington mainly, and sometimes Alaska and Hawaii – all states being the western most states in the United States (West Coast States, nd) . The West Coast is made up by the states in this order: Alaska on top with Canada separating, then Washington, followed by Oregon and California with Hawaii 2,390 miles west of California WorldAtlas, 2023) in the Pacific Ocean. The absolute location of the West Coast is 62.4114° N, 149.0730° W. This region is located in between the Pacific Ocean and mountains that separate the Eastern states from the Western (The Editors of Encyclopaedia Brittanica, 2023).
Question Response 2. Physical Characteri stics: How would you describe the climate, physiogra phy, landscape, and natural hazards of your selected region? Address at least three of the physical characteri stics listed above for this worksheet . Note: This is part of the Place theme of geography . The West coast is made of 3 main climate zones: Marine West Coast, Mediterranean, and Midlatitude desert. The marine West coast comprises of few extreme temperatures, rarely breaching above 68 degrees Fahrenheit, but with frequent rainfall on more than 250 days annually. Mediterranean climate is a mild temperature zone with low precipitation, producing only 20 inches of rain annually, and hot, dry summers ( What Are the 3 Climate Zones of West Coast U.S? | Socratic , n.d.). The Midlatitude climate is also known humid temperate climates with low humidity and precipitation except during monsoon seasons in July and August (Nijman et al., 2020). Natural hazards to the West coast states are coastal and marine geohazards like earthquakes, volcano eruptions, landslides, and tsunamis ( Coastal and Marine Geohazards of the U.S. West Coast and Alaska | U.S. Geological Survey , 2022), as well as severe droughts which cause wildfires. The West coast landscape is very diverse and ever changing due to tectonic activity, mountain building, and land subsidence ( Dynamic Coastlines Along the Western U.S. | U.S. Geological Survey , 2022). The mountains in the West coast make up the Western Cordilleran ( Dynamic Coastlines Along the Western U.S. | U.S. Geological Survey , 2022) and the states are sitting atop the Pacific Plate (Earthhow, 2023).

The West coast is described as the least religious region of the United States with 29% of the population identifying as very religious, 28% as moderately, and 43% as not religious (Norman, 2023). In California the population density is 246.1 persons per square mile, with Hawaii at 218.6 persons, Washington at 104.9, Oregon at 40.9, and Alaska with the smallest population density being 1.3 persons per square mile (Contributors to Wikimedia projects, 2021).
