Home and School Connections Erin Donegan Department of Education, Grand Canyon University ESL-546: Methods of Structured English Immersion for K-12 Education Melissa Grinstead February 7, 2024 Schoolwide Event Proposal
Dr. Principal Ware, I am here to propose an idea to you that would bring cultural into the school and it will be a school wide event in our gymnasium. I came up with an event called Around the World for the students/families and/or teachers to participate in. Having the parents come into the building and help out with this event would be so important. Students will have the chance to learn about different culutures and help them understand and learn how other students are different from them. The event will take place during the day in our gymnasium, and then we will have an open house for parents to come from 5:30 pm until 7:30 pm. It will give the parents enough time to get off work and come to the school for this event. We will have the students and parents come set up the night before and then have them come early in the morning around 7:45 am to do the finishing touches. Teachers are also allowed to participate if they want to. If we need more space, we can put tables out in the hallway on the first floor so they can visit everyone. This event for the students will begin at 8:30 am through 10:00 am for Pre-k through 2 nd grade, then 10:30 through 12:00 pm for 3 rd through 5 th grade, and then for grades 6 th through 8 th they will go from 12:30 pm until 2:30 pm. Students and teachers will be allowed to bring food and pass it out as long as we get parent consent. Also, we will have everyone have a passport and each table will have a stamp of their culture. When they fill up the passport, they will turn it into the office, and we will make baskets of things from the different cultures that we will raffle off. Being able to show off their special articles of clothing, stories, songs, food, and whatever else to everyone will help to let everyone know where they come from. For this to happen, I will have a commit of teachers that will help me get everything ready and make sure that parents are fine with their children sampling food. We will need to send
out a form right away to see how many students/families and teachers would like to do this. Once we get a count, we will be able to tell the custodian how many tables we will need to be put up and I will have a sign for the front of the tables so when they come to set up, they will know where to go. I can make the passports with my circuit machine with cardstock paper that we have laying around in the office. I can also order stamps or look for stickers once I know which cultures will be joining so they can put them on the passport. I will ask each table to donate one or two items for the baskets that we raffle off. Students/families and teachers will supply anything that they need for their tables. I will reach out and ask for some volunteers from the teachers to help for the nighttime. Cultural Connections Having a day called Around the World will be a great time for students to get to know different cultures that they don’t know about. They will not only learn about the cultures but they will learn from their classmates where they come from and what traditions they do. This is a great way for students and their families to come together and have some fun. They will be able to see what food they eat, clothing they wear, songs that are important, and so on. Experiencing hands-on of different cultures will help bring people together and experience new cultures. It will also help them accept students that are different from them. Since students will be showcasing their culture, it will allow them to embrace their own culture as well to show how important it is to them and inspire other students to learn more about different cultures. Having this event, it will promote cultural competence by allowing students to learn specific cultures and to help them respect and understand the differences. Everyone comes from somewhere different, and has their own beliefs, it will help not only students but families to not judge other people because they are different. This event allows students to get to know one another and know how it can be hard for

English Language Learners to open up and feel accepted by other students. It will help them feel excepted and feel like they belong in the school and classroom. From Colorin Colorado, “Having the ability and opportunity to showcase and highlight positive cultural differences between students and their families allows the students to feel more welcomed and helps them to have a better educational experience when it comes to being in the classroom and interacting with their peers.” When parents come into the building, this will help build a relationship with families and teachers. It will also help build relationships between families and learn about different cultures. This will help open eyes to parents and let them learn that there are different cultures out there too. Also, this will be an effective way for schools to communicate and collaborate with homes and get to know the parents. Building a relationship with the home environment, is a great way for student’s families to feel comfortable to speak to their child’s teacher or school on how they feel about things or even the need to discuss with the school. From El Yaafour “Creating a sense of connection and trust is crucial because we want the families to trust and believe that their child’s school is looking out for their best interest and want to be more involved in their child’s education.” When it comes to inclusive classrooms and classroom environments, the main reason why we should have Around the World is to help build student’s confidence with their culture and where they came from. The main goal of this day should be for students to feel more comfortable in the classroom knowing everyone is different and be able to understand and accept it will help students learn English easier. They will feel comfortable and safe in the classroom because students will be able to learn about their culture. Who knows the students in the classroom may ask more questions and want to learn more about it. It will help the teachers build a relationship with the parents and help with communication. This event will help students know
that there are other students out there that are different from them and know that it is fine to be different. This event may also put some thoughts into other students head to make them want to learn more about their culture then they know. This event will help ELLs to feel comfortable in the classroom and outside of the classroom. It will help them feel included and have a relationship with their classmates. All the students will learn how culture plays a role in everyone’s life as well as building a connection between school and home. A student’s culture background will hep them when it comes to knowing what they already know and have learned through their culture. It will make the student stronger as a learner and make them feel special. Having this event, it will allow the students and their families to come together and show their culture to the school, students, and other families. Having the families involved is so important to a student’s success because they are the ones that mainly help and support the students at home when it comes to learning language. It is very helpful for the students to go home and work on the English they have been working on at home to show their families they have the ability to learn a different language. It can encourage the parents to take the time to learn the language too. When students don’t get reinforcement at home, they will become unmotivated or even fall behind in their progress which can set them back with learning English language. Having the event is so important because it can strengthen the partnership between home and school. This event will help the students build up their confidence. From NYU Steinhardt, “Asset based behaviors and expectations are seeking to unlock a student’s potential by focusing on their talent.” Having the event will showcase the student’s strengths and what they know and support their education journey.
