Ruby Ramirez Professor Paulson English 101 October 19th, 2023 In Class Essay Coming to Miramar College I came in blind not knowing what to expect. Before college I was used to working full time and felt I had little to no motivation with pursuing my knowledge or even wanting to continue school. In this generation i've come to conclusion that nobody wants to continue school or that its a waste of time, some jobs even offer positions with no degrees because they train you themselves to work for that position. Why I wanted to go to Miramar College was no that my career offered just a highschool diploma and you could join the police academy with just the pass of a written test, sure that is the easy route. I wanted to make something for myself. I thought about my life 10 years from where I am now and being able to tell my kids "yes I went to school and got a degree and it was worth it”. Being an inspiration to the next generation that's to come, when you have that motivation and those resources and the relationships you build along the way these are reasons why I wanted to continue my education at Miramar College. Miramar College has so much to offer such as clubs, education support programs, professors who put a lot of dedication into their work who want to help you, who share their experiences to encourage you that if they did it, you can do it too. Everybody starts somewhere, most people start in the same place you are currently and take advantage of the opportunities. Taking advantage of the opportunities sometimes can leave you to ask “what can i do to
reach my goal”. One routine that keeps me pushing is having a set schedule and having consistent classes so I am motivated to come on campus nearly everyday. I am also a part of the EOPS/Next Up program and I take advantage of the resources they have to offer. One motivation is money, it's a little funny but they pay you to come to counseling meetings. I love that they do this because before I came here to Miramar I always found myself dropping out of school because I could afford to have those 1 hour counseling sessions. I couldn't miss work, with EOPS they pay you so you are able to miss work and you can't use that excuse. Another thing I do is ask for feedback from my fellow classmates or even my professors , just looking for ways I can grow in my work and see small spots I can improve on. Lastly I learned that in order to stay motivated to reach my goal I had to adapt to positive behaviors to keep this up. If I wake up in the morning dreading coming to school and struggling to get out of bed I tell myself what's the point in even going back if that's all I'm going to live on? I chose to come to school, I reminded myself of why I'm doing this and I pushed myself to not slack off. I will admit lately it's been harder to want to keep going, it's only midterms and I am halfway there! But it's only natural for me to feel exhausted, when i find myself adapting to this kind of behavior i snap back out it and remind myself how far i have gotten and continue to push through, i take the classes with a positive mindset that these professors are giving you the opportunity to learn from them so you can go on and make an amazing image of yourself. I come into school excited and eager to learn, sure I'm tired but the experience I am getting out of this is one that you may never get a chance like this again. So I tell myself that I'm halfway there and the end is going to be so worth it!
