Reflection When I first attended my first English class in college, I was nervous that this was gonna be one of the hardest classes I was gonna take this year. I've never been great at writing. I have always just hated writing essays,I felt like I was never gonna obtain the skills that were required to write a good essay. That all changed when I took English 1010. When I was in high school, I didn't improve my writing skills at all and it was all just a blur. The only thing that I miss about high school was the social aspect of it, my friends, the sports games, the dances, and much more. I have forgotten a good amount of what I learned in high school. Now i’m in college which are the big leagues. I thought college was just gonna be this huge stressful year of trying to get good grades so that I can have a good career to support my future family. I was wrong, college has been a fun experience and yes I have been stressed out on multiple occasions trying to get this assignment turned in on time or making sure I do well on this test. On the other hand, finals have been stressing me out like crazy. I have made tons of new friends and I have had a great experience for my first semester of college. English 1010 was the best english class I have ever taken. My teacher Professor Reeder has been an extraordinary teacher who loves to help his students in any way he can. I only regret not attending this class as much. I regret not being there for the lessons that are helpful to my future assignments and grades. Also not being there for important skills that he teaches that day in class. I learned to really pay attention to detail and always read the syllabus for each class. I went into college thinking that attendance didn't matter in college and the professors didn't take roll call, but I was dead wrong. I should have been more responsible at attending English 1010. One of our last assignments that we did was called a portfolio where we take two of our essays that we have done over the semester and we revise them in any way. Weather it’s meeting the word count or fixing grammar errors. The first paper that I revised was called Reading and Writing History. There were tons of mistakes in that essay that I had not noticed at first. Once I read it outloud in front of someone else, I could easily tell what was wrong with my essay. When I took this essay to the writing lab, they helped me immensely. The tutor helped me fix all of my run on sentences and my incomplete sentences. The tutor also helped me describe the details in my essay. The second paper I brought in was called Genre 2 Experiment. I had a problem of not being able to always meet the requirement of the minimum word count, in this case it was one thousand words. I just needed three hundred more words. This tutor
helped me write down my feelings, thoughts, and much more down on my paper. She helped me write down the details. All of this made it possible to make my paper sound better and make more sense. She helped me with my singular and plural adjectives so it wouldn't confuse the reader. What I learned from these papers has greatly improved my writing skills so that they will be also be helpful in the future. The writing center has not only made me a better writer but it has also encouraged me to do better. I wish I had used the writing center for all my essays, I was just too lazy. Writing these papers gave me tons of practice on how to write papers. Practice makes perfect. As long as I keep practicing these skills I can become a writer I will be pleased with. The paper that I really needed research for was Genre 2 Experiment. Without research I wouldn't have known what to put down on my paper and I would be writing down a bunch of stuff that wasn't true. Research is a very important part of writing an essay and it is also important to give credit where it is due. I had to research how they did this exact scene or sunt in the movie. The book for this course was called 21 genres. What this book taught us was how to be a better reader and writer. It had over two hundred moves in the book and moves were basically just ideas and tips that would make you a better reader and writer. My favorite move from this book is Move 189 on page 249 and it is read aloud your essay. This move helped me realize the smallest mistakes in my paper that I wouldn't have noticed the first time. Also you must read it aloud and not quietly to yourself because it won't work as well. What I loved about this class and teacher so much was the fact that we got to write about anything we wanted, as long as it followed the guidelines. This gave me as sense of relief knowing that I wouldn't have to write about some complicated subject that he taught us. It could be about anything that interested us. In the Genre Experiments we had to choose a topic in that certain genre, but we could at the same time write about anything. Our third to last assignment was a presentation. The best part about this was we could present about something we love or could nerd out about. I loved that fact that the point of the presentation was to give us practice speaking publicly in room full of people in a stress free zone. It made it that much easier to present. Ryan Reeder is one of the best teachers I have ever had and He loves to help his students in any way he can. This is easily the best English class I have ever taken.
