Abstract

An abstract discusses the purpose of the paper and outcome of your research.
A polynomial order of 5 would not give acceptable results for our thermocouple terp predictions
because for small temp ranges the relationship between temp and voltage is nearly linear. This Lab
(problem 6.2)
asked me to plot three different data sets and see if it was reasonable to have a straight
line through the graphs for each one. As you can see in figure 1 the first data set has a linear trend, as
seen in figure two data set 2 has a 6
th
degree polynomial trend line that is very accurate but a straight
trendline is also fairly accurate. Data set three does not have a straight trendline but rather an
exponential trendline as seen in figure 3.

Figure 1, The graph
for the first set of data
points, as you can see
a linear trend line
works very well
because r^2 is 1.
Figure 2, the graph
for the second set of
data points, a linear
trend line is alright
but a 6
th
degree
polynomial is much
more accurate
because r^2 is
almost 1.

Discussion

What did you do to find your answer? List the formulas or tools you used in Microsoft Excel
to accomplish the required task.
1.
I used graphs to help visualize the data sets and help me understand
the relationship between the Y and X values.
2.
I went into the graph options section to put a trendline on the graph
to see what type of function the data set is most similar to.
3.
As shown in figure 2.0 different trendlines are more accurate for
different data sets this one being a polynomial of order 6. You can tell
this by the R^2 number under the function.

List at least three things you think are worth remembering. Discuss why it was useful and
were you might use it again.
1.
When changing the options on the graph you have the ability to show
the equation which is helpful identifying the equation.
2.
When changing the options on the graph you can show the R^2 value
on the graph which is helpful because that value shows how accurate
the data sets are to the trendline.

Figure 3, A linear trend
doesn’t work very well
because the r^2 value is
low (compared to 1)
which means not many
points are close to that
trendline. An
exponential trendline is
a lot better since r^2
value is closer to 1

3.
Linear trendlines are very helpful in analyzing the data and seeing
what type of function/ most accurately matches the data set. Using
them in the future could be very helpful.
What makes a good lab report?
Elements of an Abstract
An abstract is an overview or summary of the question you where trying to answer and what you found. It
is meant to tell the reader everything they need to know,
without
discussing the details A deep discussion
is reserved for the Comments and Discussion section.
Questions you should answer
What question were you trying to answer?
What tools did you use, without details, to find an answer(s)?
What answer(s) did you find?
Support Materials
Anything that will help the reader come to the same conclusions you did should be shown here. Unless
the Support Material Element is very small, each Element should be on its own page. These are often
images captured using the
Snipping Tool
app or
the
Snip and Sketch
app.
Elements of the Discussion and Comments page
Discussion
Prove to your reader that the answer you gave is backed by a credible line of thought.
Example
1.
Raw data: year of study; number of crab caught; longitude and latitude.
2.
Raw longitude and latitude survey data were converted to half degree precision.
3.
An Excel Pivot Table was used to create a map of catch locations, with the option to display
single year data.
4.
As shown in Figure 1, in the support materials section, very few areas have a high
concentration of King Crab.
5.
While examining Figure 6 (1973 survey) and Figure 12 (1979 survey) it is noticeable that not
all areas were surveyed in those years. This limits our ability to discuss crab population for
the unfished areas.
Comments
is where we will list
AT LEAST
3 things that you feel are worth remembering about the lab. It may be a
new tool you used or it may be the way you set up a page so that it was easier to read. Whatever stuck out
to you as being interesting or useful.

1.
Pivot Tables are powerful and I particularly like the ability to quickly change views.
2.
Grouping the data into blocks of longitude and latitude was harder than I thought it would be.
3.
I would have liked to find a way to show the longitude and latitude on the heat maps.
