Wilfrid Laurier University Department of Geography and Environmental Studies GG101 Introduction to Physical Geography Google Earth Pro on Desktop We will be using Google Earth Pro on desktop as this version has more functions than the online version. The program is a free program to download and use. To download the Google Earth Pro on desktop go to: https://www.google.com/earth/versions/#earth-pro . Click on the button on the bottom right of your screen called Download Earth Pro On Desktop. The appropriate version for your computer will be downloaded. This process downloads an executable file (the file may be shown with the extension .exe or listed under file type as an application ). Using your file manager (File Explorer or Finder), locate that downloaded file on your computer (usually it is in the Downloads directory) and open that executable file (double click on filename) to install the program. Once the Google Earth program is installed on your computer, open the program. When you have the Google Earth Pro program open, there are certain settings that may need to be checked or changed. On the left side of the screen there is a menu pane with three boxes called Search, Places , and Layers . Under Layers , click on the box next to Terrain . This is needed to see the imagery in 3D. For Mac users, click on Google Earth Pro program name in the upper left corner of your screen, select Preferences . An Options window box will open. For PC users, on the top menu bar select Tools , from the dropdown box, select Options. An Options window box will open. For both Mac and PC users in the Options box (they look the same) there are tabs on the top, check and/or change the following settings: Tab Variable Setting 3D View Show Lat/Long Decimal Degrees Units of Measurement Metres, Kilometres Navigation Navigation Do not automatically tilt while zooming When you have made your selections, click Apply button at the bottom right and then click OK button to close the box.

For ease in manipulating the view and navigating in Google Earth it is recommended that you use a mouse. However, you can change the view and navigate (with practice) using the navigation controls and a combination of shift and arrow down/up.
