Step #1: Construct a scenario where a patient’s PHI is handled properly during a specific aspect of the revenue cycle. Be sure to state which point the revenue cycle your scenario is focused on:
Scenario point of Revenue Cycle: Patient Registration Process
A registration clerk at a busy hospital in downtown Orlando is going about her normal work routine as she gets a new patient that arrives for an appointment. She greets him with a warm welcome and starts to gather his PHI information. The information that she gathers include his identity, insurance coverage if any, and his medical history. Collecting his medical history is very important as the doctor will need this information to be able to know what the patient has or is being evaluated for. While collecting all this information from the patient, she informs him that all his information is safe and lets him know about the hospitals privacy policy while she is inputting all the information into the hospitals electronic health record system. As the registration clerk is inputting the patients PHI, she makes sure that the patient’s information is not visible to anyone. “Utilizing computer privacy screens and/or screen savers when practicable. If privacy screens are not available, then locate computer monitors in arears or at angles that minimize viewing by persons who do not need the information” (Refrain from discussing PHI, n.d.). After inputting his information is inputted, she informs the patient that only hospital authorized personnel will have access to his information for medical purposes only. Before she finishes inputting his information, she asks the patient if he understands the policy and when the patient acknowledges that he understands the hospitals policy she updates his record accordingly stating that he does understand the policy and gives his consent to be treated. While dealing with the patient’s the registration clerk is very friendly and has a confident
demeanor to ensure that the patients are aware that their information is being handled securely and that the registration clerk is also being compliant with the HIPPA regulations. Step #2: Construct a scenario where your patient’s PHI is handled improperly during a specific

A billing specialist at a busy Daytona Cardiologist office is rushing to meet a batch
of claims deadline. With all the steps that involves processing claims an easily turn into chaos. During that time the billing specialist prints PHI for several patients. That information included important but sensitive details about the patients like their diagnosis and treatment codes. The billing specialist went to lunch leaving the reports on his desk in open view for his colleagues to view. One of his colleagues decided to take advantage of this opportunity and snoop through the report. After snooping through the report, the said colleague decides to go ahead and spread the information about certain patients throughout the office. With, that colleague along with the billing specialists has broken the HIPPA laws by breaching the confidentiality of certain patients. The billing specialist is unaware of the mistake until he returns to his desk after lunch. The billing specialist is aware of his mistake and tries to find a way to fix it, but the damage is already done. As his intentions were focused on meeting the deadline for the batch of claims his negligence to keeping patients’ information safe led to a serious issue by breaching the patient’s confidentiality and violations HIPPA regulations. “In recent years, several fines have
