Website Project Reflection:
Summary:
The website I created is an informational website called “Future Healers’
Handbook” that guides and gives tips for future students in the healthcare sector, including
pre-dental and pre-medical students. The goals of this website were to highlight the different
ways future students in the healthcare field can navigate through their high school and
undergraduate years to succeed in graduate school and as future healthcare professionals. The
content included my own experiences so far as a pre-dental student, tips on courses to take that
will be beneficial, how to gain shadowing and volunteering opportunities and how it is helpful to
them long term, and how to stand out as a student that wants to pursue a career in medicine.
This website also includes videos and texts that showcase the path to becoming a healthcare
professional, what statistics you should have as a student, and how your overall growth as a
student should be. Another goal of the website was to motivate and encourage students not to
give up by including testimonials from other doctors who have had a difficult journey but show
how they got back on their feet and reached their goals. Another category in the website was
ways you can receive research and volunteer opportunities which helps students gain
shadowing hours.
Learning Theory:
The learning theory, cognitivism was expressed throughout the
website. Cognitivism is the learning theory that mainly focuses on the idea that students learn
more through the presentation of concepts in a clear way so they can have a better meaning of
it. In Behaviorism, Cognitivism, Constructivism: Comparing Critical Features From an
Instructional Design Perspective by Peggy A. Ertmer and Timothy J. Newby, we're introduced to
the idea that "Constructivism is a theory that equates learning with creating meaning from
experience (Bednar et al., 1991). I accomplished this in my website by guiding interaction
between those who visit the site because by having a better understanding of how students can
succeed in their goal of becoming a future doctor or healthcare caregiver, they can talk to other
people going through the same dilemmas as them and motivate themselves to continue on their
journey even if it is difficult with the help of this website.
My Experience:
My experience with the social learning/interaction I chose for my site,
which was a discussion forum, was very good and valuable for viewers. It allows people to ask
questions or ask for feedback on a particular topic they have in mind without worrying about
misinformation. It did generate interaction like I had hoped to and it was also very easy to use
and beneficial as well. It helped categorize any posts made with certain topics regarding
healthcare and included a search bar which made it efficient to search for a discussion on a
specific topic. Something I would do differently next time is I would want to add more videos to
my website to further encourage more social interaction between viewers.
Reflection on Peer Feedback:
Lastly, the peer feedback review was very helpful and it
allowed me to alter my website a little to make the introduction and purpose of the site more
clear for the audience. I improved on this feedback by creating a separate section for the
purpose of the site so the viewers recognize what is my goal. Some challenges I had faced
while making this website were how to navigate the website tool and make my website in a way
that was accessible and appealing to the audience and I overcame these obstacles by editing
the site using Wix and making sure it was engaging and fun. Overall, I had a good experience
with using the website and creating it.
