EagleBear Eastman HIST 1483-6250 Professor Rankin September 29, 2023 Killing Lincoln: The Shocking Assassination That Forever Transformed America Bill O'Reilly and Martin Dugard wrote Killing Lincoln: The Shocking Assassination That Forever Transformed America. This book concentrates primarily on the conspiracy and assassination of President Abraham Lincoln (as the title may have suggested). This book is split up into sections. The first installment, "Total War," begins on April 1, 1865, near City Point, Virginia. President Abraham Lincoln was killed 14 days later. "Unprotected," Abraham Lincoln paced the deck of the steamboat River Queen. Lincoln wondered when the battle that had divided the country for four long years would end. The reader may perceive that the emphasis is mainly on the Civil War, and this book is divided into two parts. The book details the Union and Confederacy's arduous fights and preparations for victory. The subject of slavery in the southern states dominated the early stages of the Civil War. It can be seen that the North, like the rest of the South, was adamantly opposed to slavery practices. The battle lasted four years under President Lincoln's administration, and Jefferson Davis was the Confederacy's president. While the leaders made the crucial decisions and designs, it is clear that the generals were in charge of everything that happened on the battlefield. Ulysses S. Grant (Union) and Robert E. Lee (Confederacy) led this combat. As the war's last days approached, Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant were drawn into the fray. The book does an excellent job of describing and portraying the war scenes as brutal and fascinating. People on all sides of the war include the author's thoughts, strategies, and
feelings. Grant and his achievements are explained to the readers. Regarding planning and battle tactics, Lee provided the fight, but there was jealousy on both sides. Thanks to this description of emotions, the reader can better relate to individuals on the battlefield and what they went through. The war, which was long-lived for America, was grueling and challenging. As the war's final days began to end, Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant were sucked into battle. The book does a great job of explaining the battle scenes and portraying them as bloody and riveting. The author includes all of the thoughts, strategies, and emotions felt by people on both sides of the war. The readers are educated about Grant and Lee's contributions regarding plans and war tactics. There were multiple acts of bravery and jealousy during the war. Through this depiction of emotions, the reader can better relate to those on the battlefield and what they went through. Abraham Lincoln was sworn in as the 16th President of the United States shortly after the fight. Following that, Andrew Johnson, the vice president at the time, delivered a lengthy and inebriated address. This act not only embarrassed the president but also the audience. It wasn't long until Lincoln took the stage to deliver an inspiring address (O’Reilly and Dugard). Confederate sympathizer John Wilkes Booth was not far behind, declaring that "Lincoln's inaugural speech is a performance worthy of a great dramatic actor." (O’Reilly and Dugard) As Lincoln lifts his right hand, one of America's most famous thespians stands just a few feet away. The president's comments inspired John Wilkes Booth, but not in the way Lincoln wanted" (O’Reilly and Dugard). Following Lincoln's address, Booth grew infuriated and attempted to attack him. This attempt was unsuccessful because a police officer who thought Booth simply stumbled and had no intention of killing Lincoln caught him.
It was not that long after the battle that Abraham Lincoln was sworn in as the 16th President of the United States. Andrew Johnson, the vice president at the time, gave a long and drunken speech afterward (O’Reilly and Dugard). This act not only embarrassed the president but also the crowd of listeners. Lincoln stepped up to the podium not long after to give an uplifting speech. Not too far off was Confederate sympathizer John Wilkes Booth, who stated, "Lincoln's inaugural speech is a performance worthy of a great dramatic actor. And indeed, one of America's most famous thespians stands just a few feet away as Lincoln raises his right hand. The president's words inspired John Wilkes Booth, though not in the same way that Lincoln did. intends" (O’Reilly and Dugard). Shortly after, Booth became enraged at Lincoln's speech and attempted to attack him. Due to Booth's capture by a police officer, this attempt was unsuccessful. believed that Booth didn't intend to harm Lincoln but instead believed he only stumbled. The war was exhausting and challenging, lasting a long time for America. Booth would also assassinate Grant, according to both sides. Grant had other plans and wasn't at the cinema, so this is different from what happened. Seward, the other target on Booth's hit list, escaped Powell's attempted knife attack. Throughout this chapter, the author provided additional explanations for these attempted attempts. Lincoln was in the White House on April 14th, which began "The Long Good Friday" and finished the next day (O'Reilly and Dugard). They covered the president's eyes with silver coins after he had been declared dead, and Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton said that "now he belongs to the ages." (O’Reilly and Dugard).
