Meanings in Film Our experiences make sense to us when we give them meaning. There are many ways to do so, such as through conversations, pain, trauma, or even a particular medium. Storytelling, in any form, gives us the elements to actively work on finding meaning in our experiences. Sociocultural factors, linguistic understanding, prior knowledge, and new events are ways we interpret the content of our experiences. Similarly, films convey meaning through elements such as cinematography, editing, setting, sound, characterization, lighting, and costume design. We draw our own conclusions about what a film means, and sometimes our interpretations are personal. These interpretations create a common language between filmmakers and viewers, guiding how stories are told and interpreted on the screen. Constitutive rules, such as framing, editing rhythms, and soundscapes, shape the viewer's emotional engagement and perception of a film's themes. They also use symbolism and cultural context to convey deeper meanings and messages. Constitutive rules in film create a foundation that constructs meaning and enhances the cinematic experience, whether by adhering to established norms or creatively subverting them. In this discussion, I have chosen one of my favorite movies, the 2002 film The Count of Monte Cristo. The film has been adapted nine times, but I will focus on the most recent adaptation. The film is set in the Islands of the Mediterranean in 1815-1838 and focuses on Edmond Dantes, a poor sailor falsely imprisoned for treason by his best friend, Count Fernand Mondego, who spends 13 years in Chateau D’If. During that time, he meets a priest who promises to teach him how to read, write, swordsmanship and academia and counsels him on how and why he was imprisoned. After the priest dies, Dantes plots his escape and returns home a wealthy man, ready to avenge those who wronged him, including his wife, Mercedes. I saw the film for the first time at 16 years old by stumbling upon it by mistake. I realized how much I loved the film because I am naturally intrigued by a rags-to-riches story, makeover theme, or dramatic thrillers that include the personal transformation of the protagonist's moral compass. I was 16 years old and excited to see the action and what would happen. I have seen the movie a few more times in the many years since, and I draw a different conclusion each time. Since then, I’ve better understood the film’s portrayal of the protagonist as a devout Christian who is humble, gentle, forgiving and innocent. I was able to understand his faith and his good nature. Although he does not have fine clothes, rank, or title and can’t afford a ring, he is still faithful to everyone around him. Each scene setting paints the picture of where the characters are figuratively. Edmond’s best friend, Count Mondego, has more wealth and affluence than he does, but he doesn’t envy him or worry for himself. Even though Edmond has nothing, Mondego still pursues to frame him.
As I continued to watch, I could draw my experiences of feeling betrayed and wanting revenge on those who hurt me. I also resonated with his not wanting a relationship with God after enduring capital punishment at Chateau D’If. For example, he was hanged and beaten yearly on his birthday and was hardly fed. He resided in a stone wall prison with no opportunities for personal hygiene or a way to connect with the world. His family thought he was dead for 16 years. I had a difficult childhood, and for many years, I called on God for help to no avail. Much like Dantes, I was angry at my parents, myself, and the world when I grew up. Each time I watch the movie, I gain insight into what develops a person and how we can overcome our darkest desires. I’ve learned to forgive, ask for forgiveness, and return to a relationship with Christ. Dantes realized his newfound riches could not keep him from the pain of the past, he needed to forgive and move on with what was most important to him: his family. I still enjoy the film but can genuinely engulf myself in the main character's emotions because I have a deeper understanding. One aspect that I drew from the film is wisdom. Dantes did get his revenge, but he didn’t seek to kill anyone; instead, he exposed their characters, which is most cunning. They were ended with the same fate he started with. The film taught me that kindness, gentleness, and generosity are vital traits one should possess, but using wisdom to advocate for oneself is also important. This assignment was difficult because I had to reflect on negative experiences to understand the protagonist. Nevertheless, that is the beauty of learned experiences, I can know where I was, but more importantly, how far I’ve come.
