Which source will you analyze using active reading strategies? Include the name of the
article, the author, the publication, the date, and where you found it.
Read your chosen source using the active reading strategies you learned on the previous
page. Then, summarize the overall meaning and content of the reading. Write your
summary below. Your summary should be at least one paragraph long.
The source I will analyze for this assignment is "In Bitterness and in Tears: Andrew Jackson's
Destruction of the Creeks and Seminoles," written by Sean Michael O'Brien and published by
Praeger Publishers in 2003. The book's overall message explains Jackson's bitterness towards
the Indians and his emphasis on destroying the tribes. Jackson pursued the eradication and
removal of Indians regardless of the cost and tears. The Indian people shed countless tears
and endured horrific events at the hands of Jackson and his men. Jackson's strategies included
cutting off supplies to tribes, burning food supplies and entire villages, and many other horrid
acts. Jackson firmly believed that foreign invasion was imminent if the Indians were not
removed from the land. O'Brien presents evidence from many credible secondary sources
while adequately relating the facts and judgments of the protagonist's actions.
Before reading this source, I jotted down a few questions that I was interested in answering to
support my argument. As an avid note-taker, I made notes of key information while reading.
Upon completion of the reading, I was able to make connections between injustices faced by
the Indians and real-world injustices occurring in society. My overall opinion of the source
and author is the information was well-written and detailed. The evidence used in the book
was credible and strengthened the author's argument.

What events or historical forces contributed to the Boston busing crisis of the mid-
1970s? Name at least three, and briefly explain why you think each one was a
contributory cause of the Boston busing crisis.
Many events contributed to the Boston busing crisis of the mid-1970s, including the struggle
for voting rights due to de jure segregation that was still present in the old south part of the
country at that time. Additionally, de facto school segregation was deemed unlawful in the
early 1960s; thus, the government initiated new school plans in the early 1970s that
integrated African-Americans and whites in the same schools. The quality of public schools
in predominantly African American neighborhoods began to cause concern, initiating protests
for necessary changes. These protests brought about a federal investigation which led to the
Racial Imbalance Act, outlawing segregation in schools. Any schools that did not comply
were cut off from federal funding. Additionally, the Supreme Court case Brown v. Board of
Education was one of the most significant events contributing to the Boston busing crisis.
This lawsuit forced the school districts to comply with government policy for desegregation.

busing crisis.
The Boston busing crisis generated several consequences, including the number of public-
school students declining due to white flight, mistrust and conflict caused racial tension, and
violence increased between African American and white communities. The number of school
drop-outs also significantly increased during 1971 and 1972. The dropout rate increase, along
with parents of white students transferring their children to private schools, caused the
reduction of public-school students. The school buses were no longer safe and became a
constant target. Buses required a police escort to and from school every day.

Describe one cause of the event you have chosen for your historical analysis (keeping in
mind that there are many), and explain one piece of evidence from your research that

The single most significant cause for the passage of the Indian Removal Act is greed. The
Cherokee and other tribes occupied the land in the southeastern part of the United States.
However, the discovery of gold and western expansion required trade routes to support
ignited the greed of whites and government officials. So many false accusations were
presented as reasons that Indians were a threat to society in an effort to cover the actual
reason for the removal, which was simply greed. The Cherokee fought for their land through
legal means, including lawsuits which granted ownership of their lands. The courts ruled the
land was rightfully owned by the Indians; however, Jackson disagreed and sent his men to
remove the Cherokee people. The ruling of the supreme court is a piece of evidence that will
help support my argument. One consequence of this event is the deaths of thousands of
Cherokee Indians along the Trail of Tears which was a brutal march over 800 miles in
freezing temperatures. First-hand accounts from people who were forced to relocate via the
Trail of Tears will be invaluable evidence to strengthen my argument. Another consequence
of the Trail of Tears was the disruption of social order within the Indian tribes.
