1. Identify three(3) ways that SCM will benefit from these technologies. Producing Parts When Needed: In supply chain management, 3D printing helps replace parts correctly when required. An example of this is when companies use 3D printing to create machine spare parts. This reduces downtime and saves money on keeping extra parts in stock. 4D Printing for Packaging Efficiency: 4D printing contributes to an innovative way of packaging materials, allowing them to assemble or adapt their shape autonomously to create a large variety of product dimensions. The 4D approach optimizes storage space and prohibits excess packaging materials. 3D-Printed Medical Devices: The healthcare sector is another field where they use the benefits of applying 3D printing technology. They primarily use it for implants and prosthetic devices created to the individual patients need. This patient-focused method makes medical treatments work better and reduces the amount of wasted materials. 2. Identify two(2) companies that are using 3D printing and two(2) companies that are using 4D printing in their SCM. List and explain two advantages of using this technology in each company. One company that uses 3D printing is Tesla. Two of the ways that they use it are: Speeding Up Prototyping: Tesla uses 3D printing to create quick prototypes of car parts. This allows them to test new ideas and designs rapidly, making their cars better and more innovative. Advancing Manufacturing: Tesla also expands 3D printing into actual car part production. This means they can make specific parts on-demand, saving time and money in the manufacturing process. Another company that uses 3D printing is Nike. Innovation and Customization: Nike uses 3D printing to innovate shoe design by customizing products based on athlete data. This level of customization would not be possible with traditional methods. This approach keeps Nike at the forefront of athletic shoe design with the help of 3D printing. Speed of Production and Rapid Iteration: Nike also uses 3D printing for fast prototyping and design. Unlike slow and costly traditional manufacturing, 3D printing is quick to test new ideas. This speed of development helps Nike outpace competitors and meeting athletes' and consumers' demands for cutting-edge footwear.
A company that uses 4D printing is Airbus. Two of Airbus's the advantages of 4D are Smart Air Inlets : Airbus is working with MIT to create special air inlets for aircraft engines. These inlets can automatically change their shape to control airflow for engine cooling. Unlike traditional inlets, they are lightweight and don't need heavy mechanical systems. This saves fuel and makes planes more efficient. Digital Lego for Aircraft : Airbus is partnering with MIT to use digital fabrication, like Lego blocks, to build aircraft parts. Instead of big, heavy components, they use smaller, lightweight pieces that fit together easily. This reduces the weight of planes, making them more fuel-efficient and easier to assemble. Another company that uses 4D printing to its advantage is Autodesk. Two of the benefits are: Education and Skill Development: Autodesk offers educational materials and training initiatives to assist users in acquiring the skills needed for 4D printing design. This encompasses instructional guides, online seminars, and certification courses designed to support professionals and students in building essential expertise. Tailoring and Virtual Testing: Autodesk's software empowers users to personalize and virtually assess the performance of 4D-printed objects and materials. This capability enables users to visualize and refine their designs before they move on to physical manufacturing.
