Navigating Cisco courses In ‘NetAcad’ and ‘Skills for All’ there are a range of courses with varying course navigation structures. This changes according to the course with some legacy courses having a different structure to the new or updated courses. Legacy course structure The IT Essentials: PC Hardware & Software course currently has a legacy form of course structure. It is broken down into Chapters (e.g., Chapter 1), Sections (e.g., Section 1.1), Topics (e.g., Topic 1.1.1) and Pages (e.g., Page 1.1.1.1). To view content, you must: 1. Launch Course from the IT Essentials Course Home page 2. Select the Chapter , then Section , then Topic and finally Page until you find the content you are seeking. Cisco Packet Tracer Cisco Packet Tracer is a tool used for network simulations. It is used widely throughout the Cisco courses and some network tutorial activities. It will also be referenced in various labs and exercises. You need to be very familiar with this software. Ensure you have installed an up-to-date version of Packet Tracer before commencing your study. Four problem types supported by Packet Tracer include: Concept-builders : model-building inquiries leading to student-created explications and animations of networking concepts Skill-builders : algorithmic problem solving in support of the development of networking procedural knowledge Design challenges : constraint-based problems with multiple correct solutions Troubleshooting challenges : diagnosing, isolating, and fixing the simulated network from a previously bugged network file (Source: https://www.netacad.com/courses/packet-tracer/teaching ) Installing Packet Tracer To install Cisco Packet Tracer: 1. Cisco Exams Many of the Cisco courses have exams and certifications associated with them. For the courses that require you to be enrolled by an instructor, these exams and certifications are not part of your standard TAFE course enrolment, and they will not be activated by default. Please note that Cisco quizzes are different to the Cisco exams, and these will generally be activated in your Cisco course. Cisco quizzes are self-marking, may be completed multiple times, and are recommended as an important revision tool. Exams are conducted through Cisco Networking Academies throughout the TAFE regions. There may be a commercial fee associated with taking Cisco exams and certifications. Students who finish certain Cisco NetAcad courses, and have met eligibility requirements, may be entitled to a Certification Exam Discount voucher (for further details see NetAcad FAQs). To help prepare for your exam you may wish to have the relevant Cisco course trial exam activated by your instructor under your Cisco course enrolment. To find out more about your TAFE course and/or Cisco exams and certifications talk to your course instructor/teacher or head teacher at your local TAFE college. Alternatively, contact TAFE Customer Service on 1300 045 737 for any general course enquiries. Resource ID: Topic_ICTResources_TL_CiscoNetacadGuide Page 15 of 18 © NSW TAFE

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) Am I able to access Cisco course content outside of my unit's learning requirements? You are free to access all the course topics, for your enrolled Cisco courses, except the Cisco Exams. At this time, you may only access the course content for the courses linked to your TAFE unit's learning requirements. This means you will not be able to enrol in other Cisco courses unless your teacher decides that it is useful for your TAFE unit's learning. The exception to this are the Cisco free self-enrol courses such as Networking Essentials and Introduction to Packet Tracer . How long will my Cisco account last? Will I be able to access my courses after I have finished my TAFE course? Your account will remain open after you complete your TAFE course. However, your enrolled Cisco course access will expire at the time set by your teacher. This time period should ensure you have sufficient time to complete the unit's learning requirements for your TAFE course (maximum 364 days). If you wish to remain as an active Cisco Network Academy member then you should change the email address to your personal email, after completing your TAFE course. Make sure you log in regularly to keep the account active (say every 3 months). I have previously completed Cisco NetAcad exams and/or certification and have a Cisco Certificate of Completion to prove it. Can I use this to gain recognition for my TAFE unit? The Cisco NetAcad exams and certifications, by themselves, do not provide sufficient evidence to gain recognition in a TAFE unit. You will need to provide additional evidence to cover the content of the TAFE unit not included in the Cisco NetAcad exam. This may include practical lab skills, foundation skills and knowledge. Your teacher or assessor will be able to guide you in the additional required evidence. I have already completed a Cisco NetAcad course that is part of my TAFE unit's learning requirements. Do I have to do it again? If your knowledge is fresh, then you may not need to redo the content. You can negotiate this with your teacher. We would always recommend at least a quick refresh of the content to ensure you are able to complete the TAFE unit's assessment requirements.
