Module 5 Reflection: Decision Making; Personal and Professional Perspectives
There are some qualities and abilities that should be present in an individual before they can
become a leader. There is more to being a Leader than just being confident and charismatic.
According to American College of Education (2024), “The Ultimate job of a Leader is to make
decisions, some decisions will be easier to make than others, but at some point, in a Leader’s
career, tough decisions will have to be made”. The manner in which decisions are made will
determine the type of leader you are. Employees work better in an environment where there is
freedom of expression, and they can also contribute ideas and bring forth innovations that will
help better the company or Organization in terms of Productivity and Effectiveness.
3
Demonstrating Leadership Skills
Participative leadership ends up maximizing decisions for the benefit of many (Uzonwanne,
2014). As a Leader, I will practice Participative leadership. By taking into consideration the
importance of communicating with employees and staffs within the organization. I will ensure
that they do not feel left out and take their opinions or suggestions very seriously. And also
taking the time to study my employees and get to know what their strengths and weaknesses are.
Encourage them to challenge themselves by taking on more tasks, learning new skills, and
developing more abilities/talents.
Application of Shared Decision Making
Shared Decision Making is a way of accepting the strength of coworkers and believing that
they are able to take on responsibilities without hassle, I will give employees opportunities to
lead and make certain decisions that are level appropriate. Input and ideas from them will be
taking into account and used towards the betterment of the organization. This approach promotes
better productivity and efficiency.

The path-goal theory of leadership emphasizes the importance of leaders clarifying the path to goal attainment for their followers and providing the necessary support and guidance to help them achieve those goals. According to this theory, effective leaders engage in behaviors that remove obstacles, provide incentives, and offer support to facilitate the success of their followers. These behaviors may include offering coaching and feedback, setting clear expectations, and adjusting their leadership style to fit the needs of individual followers and the demands of the situation. By actively supporting their followers in overcoming challenges and reaching their objectives, leaders can enhance motivation, satisfaction, and ultimately, performance within the organization.

This discussion has three parts.
Most people have a blend of leadership styles that they use. Some leaders are more flexible in applying a wide range of leadership styles, whereas others are more consistent and generally use just one or two preferred behaviors. Consider if two strong individuals begin a new company and discuss the following:
If two diverse individuals, each having a different leadership style, were tasked with effectively co-leading an organization, what potential conflicts might occur between these different leadership styles?
How will their personal leadership styles influence the organizational culture?
How would you recommend that these two leaders work together most effectively?

One prominent leadership theory is the situational leadership theory, which suggests that effective leadership is contingent upon the specific circumstances or context in which it occurs. According to this theory, leaders should adapt their style based on the readiness or maturity level of their followers. In other words, leaders must assess the competence and commitment of their followers and adjust their leadership approach accordingly, whether it be directing, coaching, supporting, or delegating tasks. By flexibly adapting their leadership style to meet the needs of their followers, leaders can maximize their effectiveness and facilitate the achievement of organizational goals.
Question: How can leaders effectively assess the readiness or maturity level of their followers in order to determine the most appropriate leadership style to employ?

One prevalent perspective is the trait approach, which posits that effective leaders possess certain inherent qualities such as confidence, integrity, and intelligence. Another school of thought, the behavioral approach, focuses on observable actions and suggests that successful leadership is a result of specific behaviors rather than inherent traits. Situational leadership, on the other hand, emphasizes the adaptability of leaders to different circumstances, arguing that the most effective leaders tailor their approach to the needs of the situation and their team. Furthermore, the transformational leadership approach emphasizes inspiring and motivating followers to achieve their full potential, while the transactional leadership model focuses on the exchange of rewards and punishments to achieve desired outcomes. These diverse approaches highlight the complexity of…

SECTION D Read the following extract and then answer the question belowPowerThere can be no leadership without influence because influencing other is how leaders lead (Bacon, 2011). Leaders must have the power in order to influence others to achieve desired goals. To lead or influence others effectively leaders must have a sufficient power base. The more the power a leader has the greater the influence on those that they lead (ibid). Power and influence are needed to get something done through others.French and Raven attempted to determine the sources of power leaders use to influence others in one of their research study. The findings of the research led them to identify five sources of power which can be grouped into two categories: organisational power and personal power. However it should be noted that the various sources of power are completely separate from each other. Sometimes leaders use these sources of power in varying combinations depending on the situation. Leaders must…
