Carley Rodes Northouse Case 10.2 Herb Kelleher demonstrated a range of servant leadership behaviors that significantly contributed to the growth and success of the company. His emphasis on empowering followers, fostering a collaborative and supportive work environment, and prioritizing the needs of employees played a pivotal role in shaping Southwest Airlines' unique organizational culture. Colleen Barrett also exemplified servant leadership by consistently prioritizing the needs and concerns of her followers. Barrett's commitment to placing the well-being of employees at the forefront underscored her dedication to creating a workplace culture that valued individuals and their contributions. Barrett believes that “If the airline took care of its employees, the employees would take care of the customers, and the shareholders would win, too.” The leaders of Southwest Airlines serve others based on the Golden Rule, which is to treat people the way you want to be treated. The Golden Rule is the company’s motto that was implemented by Colleen Barrett, and it is essentially the steppingstone in fostering a caring and uplifting work environment. An example of the Golden Rule being applied can be seen through the flight attendant going out of her way for the passengers. Southwest is not only serving their customers, but the organization and its employees. Kelleher is said to believe that “a happy and motivated workforce will essentially extend that goodwill to Southwest customers.” The Golden Rule of “treat people the way you want to be treated” is emphasized heavily by Southwest Airlines. The role the Golden Rule plays in servant leadership is fundamental to fostering a culture of empathy, respect, and collaboration. Based on figure 10.1, the outcomes of servant leadership at Southwest Airlines are follower performance and growth, organizational performance, and societal impact. These outcomes are influenced by the receptivity of followers, which is shown by the care followers receive and the high regard in which they are held. It is emphasized that a company's true strength lies in its greatest asset, its people. This acknowledgment emphasizes the pivotal role of fostering a culture of care, respect, and high regard for individuals within the organization, as it directly contributes to the overall success and positive societal contributions of the company.
Carley Rodes Northouse Case 11.3 The competing commitments Marlboro’s president was trying to navigate was aiming to preserve the philosophy and values of the institution, secure its ongoing existence, and facilitate a smooth academic transition for students. Along with this, there was a stress to identify a financially sustainable solution addressing challenges such as declining enrollment while alleviating adverse effects on the Marlboro community. I would describe the work of Marlboro’s president as adaptive leadership. Quigley acknowledged the diminishing enrollment and financial instability Marlboro College faces. He took the proactive steps of establishing a Strategic Options Task Force to develop potential remedies. In this case, the Strategic Options Task Force has created multiple partnerships with other institutions in hopes to allow current students to finish their studies without repercussions. The president utilized the leader behaviors in different dimensions: Get on the balcony : Quigley adopted a reflective stance by creating the strategic options task force and exploring collaborative possibilities with other institutions. This enabled him to attain a more comprehensive view of Marlboro College's challenges and potential solutions. Identify adaptive challenges: Quigley acknowledged the adaptive challenges confronting Marlboro College, including enrollment decline, financial pressures, and the imperative for a sustainable future. Regulate distress: Quigley maintained confidentiality in negotiations with Emerson College until a binding agreement was secured, preventing unnecessary anxiety arising from public uncertainty. Maintain disciplined attention: Throughout the process, Quigley adhered to a focused pursuit of a viable solution for the college's future, resisting the temptation of immediate closure.
