Part One Determining the Key Players and Structure in a Labor Relations Environment In this part of the project, you will conduct a Labor Relations Environment Analysis to describe the key players and the structure of the labor relations environment at your organization. If you prefer, you could describe the labor environment for the U.S. Big Three auto companies: GM, Ford, and Stellantis (formerly known as Chrysler). Complete the Labor Relations Analysis below. Fill out as much as you can, then talk with a manager or knowledgeable colleague in your organization to complete the remainder. Labor Relations Environment Analysis results 1. Part Two Assessing the State of Labor Relations in Your Organization In this part of the project, you will complete an informal, high-level assessment of the current state of labor relations at your organization using the Labor Relations System Analysis. You can download that tool from the project page in Canvas. Note: A full-scale, in-depth assessment can be challenging and labor intensive and is beyond the scope of this course. For this course, you are simply expected to complete an informal assessment of your organization, or an organization of your choosing, using the knowledge you have available to you within the time constraints of this course. Instructions Imagine there is an effort to form a union at your organization. Complete a Labor Relations System Analysis to help assess the situation. One way to conduct your analysis is by meeting with one or two knowledgeable colleagues and using this tool as the basis for discussion and brainstorming. Record your best estimate of the current state of affairs, even if your knowledge of the organization is limited. Using the Labor Relations System Analysis to complete this part of the project will help you become more aware of the potential relationship between organizational and employee outcomes and the processes and attitudes currently found in your organization. Note: If you need an organization on which to base your coursework, consider the labor relations at one of the U.S. Big Three auto companies — GM, Ford, or Stellantis (formerly known as Chrysler) — with regard to their relationship with the United Auto Workers (UAW). Recall that the UAW represents all of the workers (“unskilled” and “skilled”) at the Big Three. Since the mid 1940s, the companies and the UAW have regularly negotiated multi-year, company-wide “national” collective bargaining at each company that is supplemented by plant-level “local” collective bargaining agreements. Review the Labor Relations System Analysis tool then use the space below to enter your answers. Feel free to modify your descriptions in any way to conceal the identity or protect the confidentiality of the organization and individuals you are describing. 5 © 2024 Cornell University
