Scenario
Mode Choice
Justification for Choice
Your company is going through a reorganization and you have been tasked
with firing three of your team members.
Face-to-Face Conversation
The best channel of communication for this scenario is face-to-face conversation. Releasing employees for any reason is a challenging task for all involved, leaders of the organization, and for obvious reasons, the impacted employees. A reorganization where job loss is involved is a very delicate situation that requires a higher degree of richness since it is a difficult message. The message needs to be conveyed with sincerity which is better suited for oral communication. This ensures the message is delivered clearly and immediate feedback is received. Both the sender and receiver are directly engaged in the delivery of the message.
You have a last minute change to a meeting agenda and need to let meeting attendees know about it quickly.
Email
The best channel of communication for providing a last-minute update to an agenda
item for an upcoming meeting would be an email. This is a simple message which can be completed with less richness. Composing an email with be the quickest methos to ensure all invited participants receive the message. Since this is an agenda item, it would also be beneficial to have a written record of the change for future reference for all parties involved. This
message is in advance of the meeting so immediate feedback is not required but instead can be discussed, as needed, during the scheduled meeting.
Your company is running a
special limited time promotional offer for customers.
Social Media Post, or Multiple Channels if other contact information is available
The best channel of communication for announcing a special limited time promotional offer for customers is through a social media post. You can also choose text
messaging if you have been provided with your customers contact information. This is an important message for the business and using multiple channels will increase the likelihood your message is seen by your customers. Additional channels provide more exposure to a business which can drive more customers to the business and increase the success of the business. Having the message in writing also provides
a point o9f reference to the advertised promotional offer. This is helpful so customers remain aware of the actual offering/service being provided.

Training and Development Initiatives (adapted from ICMR IBS Centre for Management Research, Employee Training, and Development at Motorola)
The Initial Efforts
Motorola had started training its employees way back in the 1920s, and the importance of training continued to grow. Till the early 1980s, Motorola had its own standard employee development activities in which training was the key element.
During those days, when people were recruited for manufacturing, the company looked for three essential qualities in the employees - the communication and computational skills of a seventh-grader; basic problem-solving abilities both in an individual capacity and as a team player; and willingness to accept work hours as the time it took to achieve quality output rather than regular clock hours.
The quality of the output was the primary consideration for Motorola, and employees were expected to make full efforts to achieve quality. Most of the employees learned their job through observing the…
