Section 1: Problem Statement (short description of the choice we are facing – full sentences) [2 marks] Sergio finds himself in a predicament after discovering how Louis is conducting interviews for the hiring process for his company. Sergio intends to hire 15-20 of the most qualified candidates, however Louis has an unethical approach for interviewing. Sergio needs to consider the morality of Louis’ actions, as well as protecting the reputation of the company. Section 2: Key Issues (What are the ethical challenges? What would be a good outcome with regard to each challenge? – discuss three issues in full sentences) [6 marks] 1) The first key ethical issue is protecting the company’s reputation. A good outcome would be to re-do the first round of interviews with Sergio present to ensure there is a transparent relationship between the company and the applicants. 2) The second key ethical issue is a breach of trust between employees. A good outcome would be speaking with Louis about morals and honesty; reviewing principles for a successful hiring process to secure the trust in their relationship 3) The third key ethical issue is making sure interviewees have an open-minded, honest interview process. A good outcome would be treating everyone fairly and to guarantee an unbiased interview. Section 3: Your Recommendation (Executive summary - very short – max 3 full sentences) [3 marks] I recommend that Sergio begins to work toward creating a new hiring approach that will give everyone an equal chance to display their skills. I would also recommend Sergio to deeply consider the employment status of Louis, as he has gone against moral principles that Sergio follows, which is a large threat to his contribution to the company.
Section 4: Briefly describe two alternatives (in case your recommendation is rejected); explain the pros and cons of each (bullet points) [6 marks] 1) Louis and Sergio can tell the candidates the truth about the USB evidence. The pros are that this values honesty as the best policy, and will show the company’s integrity. A con would be that this can place a negative image on the company and discourages the trust the candidates will have, causing them to potentially lose interest in the company. 2) Louis and Sergio can continue interviews without exposing the company about their approach. The pros to this solution is that they will be able to identify good applicants as opposed to unqualified ones. An extreme and risky con is simply that lying is unethical, unfair, and continuing the process this way is an invasion of privacy. If this program is discovered by the public, Sergio’s company can potentially get sued. Section 5: Explanation of your recommendation (how does it respond to the challenges identified? how is it better than the alternatives? – full sentences) [10 marks] The recommendation to Sergio mainly addresses the third key ethical issue by redemption through a newly designed recruitment process that allows for transparency between the company and its applicants. This should give the recruiters a good base to properly analyze all applications that can prove their true competency for the role. A new process could include but is not limited to the requirement of a portfolio. This is a good way for candidates to showcase their skills and achievements through past experiences. Another idea could be to assign the applicants with a fairly simple task that outlines the basic needs for the role they are applying for. This allows for candidates to put their skills into action where it would be difficult to receive outside aid in completing it. Following these two ideas, Sergio can then conduct online interviews via Zoom or Google Meet to have one final verbal challenge. Through these, Sergio can have a smooth hiring process without the guilt of storing personal information. The second part of the recommendation addresses the second key ethical issue. With Sergio’s consideration of possibly laying Louis off, he can take the weight off of his shoulders that keeps him from relying on his employees to follow their mission statement and work to respect anyone they interact with. Firing Louis could also mean applicants are told the truth and potentially claim damages for their losses. Overall, the advantages of this approach, with the requirement of Sergio to be present during the process at all times, will be beneficial as he will be able to conduct interviews in a true and respectful manner. This approach is more appropriate than the alternatives listed above because it is less of a risk for negative brand image, and risk of dealing with legal consequences.
