WEEK 7: Case study On Ethics
1. Based on this information, what type of ethics is Elizabeth practicing—egoism, utilitarianism, or altruism? Why do you categorize her ethics this way?
Elizabeth is practicing the ethical theory of egoism. "Those who practice egoism are most concerned with how the outcome of their decisions will affect them personally." (
MGMT
312:Week 7: Ethics and Team Leadership
n.d.)When Elizabeth puts her own ambition and dream of public recognition over the integrity and statistical validity of her research in this scenario, she demonstrates the definition of egoism. She does this to gain personal attention and perhaps a television appearance, which she has always dreamed of. She releases the survey results early to be in line and relevant with the current media focus on gun control. She
disregards academic/ research integrity and statistical standards for her own gain. Furthermore, this decision sets a bad example for her team members.
2. Do you agree or disagree with the way Elizabeth handled this situation? What should she
have done differently?
I disagree with the way Elizabeth handled the situation. She compromised the validity of her and her teams research by cutting the survey short. In her role as leader, she should've made sure she upheld ethical research practices and weighed
the consequences of either decision. In addition, she misled readers and possibly the public by omitting sample size information. Her decision as a leader could create a culture in her team where not following ethical statistical research practices can become the norm. The survey should have been completed as planned, and the results should have been published in full, regardless of the timing or personal benefit. Her and her team's names could possibly be tarnished.
3. Do you agree or disagree with the way her team handled this situation? What should her team have done differently?
The team's decision to stand by Elizabeth's decision is wrong, and I disagree. While it's
important to respect and trust leaders in a team, ethical standards should not be compromised. The team members had a responsibility to uphold the integrity of the research. They could have voiced their concerns about releasing unfinished and misleading results. "When a team is
effective, members hold one another accountable for their actions. This includes not relying on the team leader to provide accountability." (
MGMT 312:Week 7: Ethics and Team Leadership
n.d.)The more responsible approach would have been to make sure the survey was
completed as originally planned and to ensure the results were reliable.
4. If the team had completed the research as originally planned and released their paper later, they might have missed the opportunity to have their paper discussed on national news. Should this be a consideration in this situation? Why or why not?
Although current media can increase the visibility and impact of research, they should not be at the expense of its integrity. To ensure the validity of the research, it is important to complete it as planned in this situation. Media attention isn't as important as the accuracy and
reliability of the findings. When making decisions, researchers and their teams should follow ethical standards and the truth rather than chasing media attention or personal gain.
In another approach, Elizabeth might have asked the media if she could still speak on this matter. She might have explained that the research was still in progress and incomplete, and provided information once completed. In trying to find out if this is an ethical
practice, I found no clear answer, so my suggestions may not be valid.

Ethical Question: What would you do?
As one of the newer district sales managers for a fast-growing technology company, you’ve asked your salespeople to give you three sales forecasts in their territories for the coming year: (a) optimistic, (b) pessimistic, and (c) most likely. After totaling their three different sales forecasts, you realize that the optimistic forecast will increase sales by nearly 20% in your district, the pessimistic forecast by 10%, and the most likely by about 15%. Your national sales manager has asked each district sales manager to give her their most likely sales forecast for the coming year, so she can assign sales quotas. Your thoughts are that it’s probably best to give her the most pessimistic sales forecast because this should help ensure that she assigns your district a quota that you should easily achieve. If you can exceed your assigned district sales quota by a substantial amount, you’ll probably get a large bonus, and you may even be named district…

3.4 ETHICS CASE: ASSIGNING COSTS
Adapted from Mowen's "Managerial Accounting (7th Ed.)" Case 4-67
Tonya Martin, CMA and controller of the Parts Division of Gunderson Inc., was meeting with
Doug Adams, manager of the division. The topic of discussion was the assignment of overhead
costs to jobs and their impact on the division's pricing decisions. Their conversation was as
follows:
●
Tonya: Doug, as you know, about 25% of our business is based on government
contracts, with the other 75% based on jobs from private sources won through bidding.
During the last several years, our private business has declined. We have been losing
more bids than usual. After some careful investigation, I have concluded that we are
overpricing some jobs because of improper assignment of overhead costs. Some jobs are
also being underpriced. Unfortunately, the jobs being overpriced are coming from our
higher- ume, labor-intensive products, so we re losing business.
Doug: I think I understand. Jobs associated…

Topic: Launch Management and Public Policy Issue
Read and explain briefly what I means.
“The worst thing about product liability is what they call strict liability. Now, I know it’s hard to prove negligence against a typical large corporation of today, but that’s no reason to go to the other extreme and say a company is guilty when there is no evidence it did anything wrong. We market thousands of products in- volving thousands of people.
Strange things are going to happen. Employees are not robots—they make human errors. You’ve probably already made a mistake or two today, yet if you were in a business, you could be sued, found guilty, and then hit with a punitive damages ruling like a common criminal. That’s just not fair.”

He had joined the organization right after graduating college and had been promoted and done well during his time there. This ultimately led to his losing his job as it was against First National Bank policies for employees to engage in personal activities online for non-work related activities during the workday. Frank lamented his firing stating that it was a complete overreaction, his activities were innocent, occasional, and brief. His skincare company and product line had already topped the $1 Million mark and showed no signs of slowing. The line was formerly owned Zirh Skin Nutrition, a male skincare line that was acquired by Shisheido in 2000. Rainer immediately recognized an underserved market segment among young people ages fifteen to twenty-nine, a group he called “Generation Me”. A combination of Generation X and Generation Y, Generation Me had long been ignored by the more recognized skincare companies, which tended to make products to help older consumers fight such skin ailments as wrinkles and recondition ageing…
