WEEK 7: Case study On Ethics 1.    Based on this information, what type of ethics is Elizabeth practicing—egoism, utilitarianism, or altruism? Why do you categorize her ethics this way? Elizabeth is practicing the ethical theory of egoism. "Those who practice egoism are most concerned with how the outcome of their decisions will affect them personally." ( MGMT 312:Week 7: Ethics and Team Leadership  n.d.)When Elizabeth puts her own ambition and dream of public recognition over the integrity and statistical validity of her research in this scenario, she demonstrates the definition of egoism. She does this to gain personal attention and perhaps a television appearance, which she has always dreamed of. She releases the survey results early to be in line and relevant with the current media focus on gun control. She disregards academic/ research integrity and statistical standards for her own gain. Furthermore, this decision sets a bad example for her team members. 2.    Do you agree or disagree with the way Elizabeth handled this situation? What should she have done differently? I disagree with the way Elizabeth handled the situation. She compromised the validity of her and her teams research by cutting the survey short. In her role as leader, she should've made sure she upheld ethical research practices and weighed  the consequences of either decision. In addition, she misled readers and possibly the public by omitting sample size information. Her decision as a leader could create a culture in her team where not following ethical statistical research practices can become the norm. The survey should have been completed as planned, and the results should have been published in full, regardless of the timing or personal benefit. Her and her team's names could possibly be tarnished.   3.    Do you agree or disagree with the way her team handled this situation? What should her team have done differently? The team's decision to stand by Elizabeth's decision is wrong, and I disagree. While it's important to respect and trust leaders in a team, ethical standards should not be compromised. The team members had a responsibility to uphold the integrity of the research. They could have voiced their concerns about releasing unfinished and misleading results. "When a team is effective, members hold one another accountable for their actions. This includes not relying on the team leader to provide accountability." ( MGMT 312:Week 7: Ethics and Team Leadership  n.d.)The more responsible approach would have been to make sure the survey was completed as originally planned and to ensure the results were reliable.   4.    If the team had completed the research as originally planned and released their paper later, they might have missed the opportunity to have their paper discussed on national news. Should this be a consideration in this situation? Why or why not? Although current media can increase the visibility and impact of research, they should not be at the expense of its integrity. To ensure the validity of the research, it is important to complete it as planned in this situation. Media attention isn't as important as the accuracy and
reliability of the findings. When making decisions, researchers and their teams should follow ethical standards and the truth rather than chasing media attention or personal gain. In another approach, Elizabeth might have asked the media if she could still speak on this matter. She might have explained that the research was still in progress and incomplete, and provided information once completed. In trying to find out if this is an ethical practice, I found no clear answer, so my suggestions may not be valid.
