Week 5: For this Discussion there are three questions: 1. Discuss a positive or negative experience you have had with a supervisor, (no real names please). 2. Have you ever left a job due to a bad supervisor? 3. Knowing what you know now (after 4 weeks of our time together), what would you have done differently as that supervisor? Submit your answer in this Discussion by selecting "Post New Thread" above. 1. Then respond to at least two (2) of your peer's answers by selecting the "Reply" link. For this week, reply to ALL peers that reply to your initial post. Make sure your peer replies utilize applicable course material, concepts, and terminology. Additionally, do not forget to respond to your instructor's questions. This is also a part of your Discussion grade Good morning professor and class. 1. For the discussion this week I will be discussing an interaction I had with a supervisor when I was working at the VA. Quick background, I was employed there for about a year doing hospital supply purchase. When I interviewed, I was open about my family status, being a working mom and military spouse. Shortly after I began working, I found there was no flexibility when it came to needing time for my children’s appointments or needs. I was even given a hard time when took the projected leave I had given them when I started (this was a request they had, and they approved all the dates). I began to look for a new job and when I received one, my department lead to that opportunity to call me to his office an tell me how much he appreciated me as an employee and see what he could do to keep me at the VA. At that point it was laughable to me. They had already shown me there were not flexible to my schedule, and not willing to work with my needs. I believe he could have handled the situation better and had feedback with me well before I got to a point where I was looking for a new position. 2. I have not left a job due to a bad supervisor, per say, but they have made it easier to look for a position to better myself. As stated in the situation above, I believe if my supervision would have been more open to talk with me on the scheduling of my position, and we could have worked together to find terms that worked for all of us, I may not have looked to leave the VA. 3. If I were the supervisor, I would have immediately me with the employee to see if there was a way to adjust scheduling to meet both the employees and the company’s needs. Additionally, I would look at the work product she was putting out and seeing if there really was a major concern when it came to leave. If a company was concerned with employees taking too much time, they should not allow for the time to be accrued. Setting up clear guidelines and standards from the beginning, allows for employees to have the proper expectations when they are starting a new position.
