Unit 3 Assignment: Product Strategy
In terms of the assigned reading, Juicy Fruit Gum appears to be in the "Maturity" stage of the product life cycle. Chapter 10 Stages of the Product Life Cycle states that the Maturity stage of the cycle consist of: “Costs are lowered as a result of increasing production volumes and experience curve effects, sales volume peaks and market saturation is reached,
new competitors enter the market, prices tend to drop due to the proliferation of competing products, and brand differentiation and feature diversification is emphasized to maintain or increase market share” This is shown when the case study begins by saying that the company found itself under pressure by its competitors and that there was a decline in sales and market
share, coupled with the need to capture the teenage market. This suggests that Juicy Fruit Gum is in the maturity stage due to increased competition, and the need to focus on maintaining market share and profitability.
Using the four consumer product categories I would classify Juicy Fruit Gum as a "Convenience Product." Convenience products are typically items with low cost that consumers purchase frequently with little effort and decision making. Juicy Fruit Gum embodies what it means to be a convenience product: It's a low cost, everyday item often bought on impulse that consumers buy for immediate use. It's readily available in plenty or almost every retail store, making it super easy for consumers to access. In addition the case study also mentions that teens crave something sweet and that Juicy Fruit is their top choice, indicating that it's a product consumers buy for convenience without extensive evaluation.
I identify the attributes of Juicy Fruit Gum as energizing, refreshing, natural sweetness. Consumers associate Juicy Fruit with natural sweetness, and teens mentioned that chewing Juicy Fruit gum refreshes and energizes them, indicating that it provides a quick pick-me-up. This creates value for customers through taste, satisfaction, quick energy, and convenience. Juicy Fruit Gum's sweetness and natural taste provide a satisfying and

How do I do this?
Down Creek Boots (DCB) is a boot manufacturer (fictitious) that focuses on making high-quality leather work boots, with prices ranging from $200-$350. After being successful in this market for over 30 years and developing a positive brand reputation and loyal customers, DCB has decided to broaden their line to include leather hiking boots. While these share some characteristics with work boots, the design will be slightly different and different soles will be used. They are fairly confident annual demand will be between 30,000 and 40,000 pairs in the first year, and expect a 10% growth rate in sales for the next few following years. However, in their plant in Minnesota, DCB currently has little excessive capacity. Thus, to make the new boots, DCB will either need to expand their plant, or outsource production to another boot maker. If they outsource production of the boots, they will outsource production to a firm that has the manufacturing capability to produce them…

Article: Planning for Holiday Shipping at FedEx
FedEx started as Federal Express in 1971 and made its first delivery in 1973 with 14 aircrafts and 389 employees, successfully delivering 186 packages.50 The company was founded by Frederick W. Smith who first presented his idea for the shipping company in a term paper for a business class at Yale University in 1964. Smith did not do well on the paper as his professor did not see the need for overnight package deliveries. But more than 45 years later, Smith has clearly proved his professor wrong. FedEx now employs more than 325,000 employees and uses its 652 aircraft and more than 100,000 trucks to ship on average 10.5 million packages a day in over 220 countries.
Managing such a large enterprise with so much complexity clearly requires effective planning. Similar to other shipping companies, FedEx engages in significant planning to prepare for Christmastime deliveries, the company’s peak season. FedEx typically meets with major…
