1. Were you surprised by how much or little training there was around electric surgery? Yes. This is because the use of electrical current technology comes with potential risks that could harm the patient. These risks could include burns, serious fires, or manipulating skin tissue more than necessary. Therefore, it's important to ensure that the medical professional using the technology has the necessary skills and knowledge to prevent such harm and protect the patient's well-being. 2. 60 Hz of electricity is taken from the wall into the machine and converted to approximately how many Hz? That approximately would be 500,000 Hz. 3. Give me one of the examples they discussed as risk factors when introducing electricity into the surgical environment. The Electrical surgical unit that works using electricity is an ignition source that can potentially cause fires during surgery. These fires can result in severe burns to the patient, potentially causing long-term damage to their health. 4. Is suctioning the surgical smoke (plume) to the suction canister an effective evacuation method? No, because the canister does not have filters. The plume contains harmful particles, including viruses, bacteria, and other pathogens, that can remain in the air even after being suctioned to the canister. The canister just moves the plume in the air from one place to another without destroying any toxins or pathogens in the air. This can pose a risk to the health of the medical staff and the patient. Therefore, additional measures such as using smoke evacuation systems with high-efficiency filters and ensuring proper ventilation in the operating room should also be taken to minimize the exposure to surgical smoke. 5. What is something you learned or thought about that you haven't before? Was there anything discussed that stood out to you? I discovered that the inventor of the ESU, Bovie, was not a doctor, although his father was. While there is no formal training for using the Electrical Surgical Unit, the Instructions for Use (IFU) provide valuable information about the intended user profiles, including the minimum and maximum education and understanding requirements. For instance, the IFU highlights the importance of removing or not removing jewelry on the
patient. However, what struck me the most was that some members of the surgical team seemed to be uncertain about their roles and responsibilities.
