Alyssa Lucas MCCG 100 June 2 nd 2023 Professor Whitson Week 5 Code Set Comparison Essay The purpose of CPT- Level 1 HCPCS is for providers to bill accurately when it comes to the physical procedure done to a patient in the outpatient setting of the medical field. This was created to keep procedures uniform that even though a provider has their own little things they do that regardless the basics of the procedure are the same and will be billed that way as well. HCPCS Level 2 is used to code equipment used/needed for a procedure or any kind done by the provider. This system for coding also came around when it was discovered that in hand written documentation that each provider could describe the same procedure in a million different ways causing big discrepancies in billing. They had to standardize the system to avoid this happening again. ICD-10-CM is used for diagnoses in all health care settings. When providers document in the medical records the coders then go and code with ICD based off what was written. ICD-10-PCS is for procedures performed only in the US inpatient hospital health care settings. Physicians do not use this code set to report their services, including ambulatory services and inpatient visits. CPT-Level 1 HCPCS consists of five characters that may be numeric or alphanumeric it is used by physicians and insurance companies they use them to describe services provided to a patient during an outpatient encounter. ICD-10-PCS was developed to help provide more detail and still allow expansion; it consists of 7 that each have a
specific meaning based on the section of the coding system. ICD-10-CM codes contain 3 to 7 characters to describe their patient’s conditions; from symptoms, syndromes, diseases and other reasons for needing medical attention. HCPCS Level 2 are five character alphanumeric codes, it was made allow more accurate reporting. A code for ICD-10-CM is A00-B99. Certain infectious and parasitic diseases. A code for CPT-Level 1 HCPCS is 90716, this denotes the administration of the chickenpox vaccine. A code for HCPCS Level 2 is R0070 it is used to denote transporting personnel and portable x-ray equipment to nursing homes. A code for ICD-10-PCS is 047K0ZZ this is used to describe the dilation of a right femoral artery using an open approach. Without accurate information/updates of these code systems it would make billing everywhere hard to do and it would be extremely inaccurate causing overbilling and underbiling. Not only do coders need this information accurate but so do the providers in order to chart accurately.
