MCE 414 - Mechanical Engineering Experimentation Homework 3 Prof. Ash Giri Due: Nov. 1, 2023 Problem 1 [15 pts]- The static pressure of air (1.2 kg m 3 ) flowing in a pipe is measured by a precision gauge to be 68.95 kPa. A pitot tube manometer indicates 0.523 m of mercury. The density of mercury is 13,600 kg m 3 . If frictional losses are insignificant, what is the air flow velocity? Problem 2 [15 pts]- A truck is driven at 50 mph into a 10 mph headwind. The frontal (pro- jected) area of the truck is 100 ft 2 . The coefficient of drag is 0.5 and the density of air is 0.076 lb m ft 3 . What is the amount of drag force experienced by the truck? Problem 3 - A small airplane that has a mass of 1,500 lb m is about to take off. The airplane has a coefficient of lift of 1.0 at an Angle of Attack (AOA) of zero and it linearly increases by 0.1 every 10 degrees; wings with a constant chord length of 3.5 ft and a total wingspan of 30 ft; a coefficient of drag of 0.3; and a frontal area of 40 ft 2 that linearly increases by 5 ft 2 every 10 degrees. If the air is still, and the density of air is 0.076 lb m ft 3 at the ground level a) [15 pts] what is the critical speed needed for takeoff? b) [Extra Credit: 15 pts] If the runway is 1000 ft long, the total coefficient of friction between the road and the airplane is 0.25, what is the average thrust needed to achieve the critical takeoff speed? Problem 4 [20 pts] - A venturi meter with an 8 in diameter throat is installed in a 12 in diameter water line. The venturi is perfectly smooth, so that the discharge coefficient is 1.00. An attached mercury manometer registers a 4 in differential. What is the volumetric flow rate? 1
Problem 5 [15 pts] - A 1/20 airplane model is tested in a wind tunnel at full velocity and temperature. What is the approximate ratio of wind tunnel pressure to normal ambient pressure? Problem 6 [20 pts] - Water at 150 F ( ρ = 61.2 lb m ft 3 ) flows in a 8 in pipe at a rate of 2.23 ft 3 /s. A sharp edge orifice with a 7 in diameter hole is placed in the line. A mercury differential is used to record the pressure difference. If the Orifice has a flow coefficient, C f of 0.62, what deflection in inches of mercury is observed? ( ρ mercury =848.6 lb m ft 3 ) 2
