MCE 466 - Computer Assignment #3 Plane Stress Analysis Due: 11/13/23 @ 11:30 PM Use Abaqus to examine variations of problem 7-25 in the text by Logan. Imposing symmetry conditions as appropriate, determine the maximum von Mises stress in the vicinity of the holes. Assume plane stress conditions. Apply the load as a negative pressure, which assumes that the load is applied uniformly along the left and right edges. Part A – Hand calculation Using the stress concentration curve from Shigley’s text 1 , estimate the maximum stress at the edge of a plate with a single hole Part B – Finite element analysis 1 “Shigley's Mechanical Engineering Design,” 10th Edition, Budynas and Nisbett, p. 1024, 2015.
Compare the performance of linear triangles (CST) to quadratic (LST) triangles. For each case, perform a mesh convergence study (evaluate at least 3 meshes for each case) to convince yourself that your solution is within 2% of the exact solution. For the “coarse” and “medium” meshes, use a uniform mesh density. For the “fine” mesh, use “bias edge seeds” refine the mesh near regions of stress concentration. Table 1.
